EXPERIMENT NO. 2
FINENESS OF HYDRAULIC CEMENT CONCRETE
BY SIEVE ANALYSIS METHOD
OBJECTIVE
To determine the fineness of cement by dry sieving as represented by the mass of residue
left on a sieve.
DISCUSSION
This standard covers the procedure for determining the fineness of cement by dry sieving
as represented by the mass of residue left on a sieve.
This experiment is carried out to check the proper grinding of cement. The cement which
is produced by an industry is checked for its quality, that either it is good for certain type of
construction of it doesn’t possess that much strength. If the cement is fine then greater is its
cohesiveness, which is the property, required in the concrete because it gives compactness to the
concrete.
Increasing the fineness of cement reduces the amount of bleeding in concrete. This is more
pronounced for concrete containing no entrained air.
1. Clean first the 0.075 mm (No.200) sieve using the bristle brush. Then attach the sieve
to the pan.
3. Perform the sieving by doing horizontal circular motion on the pan to avoid the spilling
of the sample. Now cover the sieve.
4. Hold the covered sieve in one hand over the collecting pan. Remove the pan from the
sieve. Note, gently tap the side of the sieve using the handle of the brush. By tapping the
side of the sieve, the remaining cement residue sticking into the sieve will be removed.
5. Replace the sieve in the pan, then carefully remove the cover and return any cement
residue caught in the cover.
6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until almost all finer particles passed the sieve. Continue the sieving
operation for 5 minutes or until only less than 0.1% of the sample passes the sieve.
To check if the less than o.1% passed the sieve, do the following:
a. Hold the sieve in slightly inclined position over a white clean and dry paper.
b. Strike the side of the sieve with the palm in an upward stroke at the rate of 25
strokes per 10 seconds for a total of 150 strokes per 1 minute. Remember to rotate
the sieve about 60 degrees on its plane for every 10 seconds.
c. Weight the cement collected on the white paper. If it less than 0.1% then proceed
to the last step, otherwise continue the sieving.
7. Carefully open the set and transfer the residue on the sieve to a white clean and dry
paper, then, weigh the cement (R).
COMPUTATION
Calculate the fineness modulus of the cement. F.M. as a percentage of fineness to the
nearest 0.1% from the equation:

OBSERVATION / ANALYSIS:
In order to determine the fineness of the cement, the sieve method was used. First, a sample
of cement weighing 50g was placed on the no. 200 sieve (0.075mm). The lumps in the sample
were breakdown using the fingers to avoid damaging the sieve. The sample was sieve by the group
members alternately with the total of 15 minutes. The residue left on the sieve was weighed using
the digital balance. With the weight of the residue, the fineness of the sample cement may now be
computed.
ILLUSTRATION:
CONCLUSION:
After the experiment, the fineness of the cement is determined by sieve method. Based on
the results, it was observed that sieving process should be done properly and carefully. In the data
gathered, the average fineness of the fineness of the cement is 97.554%.
