History of Theater

Theater originated in Ancient Greece during 384-322 BCE as part of religious festivals honoring Dionysus, the god of fertility and wine. The city of Athens was the cultural center and held an annual drama festival called the Dionysia. Citizens were required to participate in theatrical productions and attend performances. Greek theaters had a large circular orchestra area for plays and a skene building behind for backstage areas. The auditorium could hold 10,000 to 20,000 people and was cut into hillsides with semi-circular seating.
