Burkan Mehmet, a British citizen originally from Turkey, discusses his experience living in London. He was initially homesick when he first moved to England in 1986 to study, finding it much quieter than he expected. However, he grew to love the cosmopolitan area he lives in, where his florist shop serves customers from many different cultures. While he would like to return to Istanbul someday, for now he enjoys London and says England feels more organized than Turkey.

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It describes or modifies a person, thing or place.
My daughter is intelligent.
 An adjective often comes before a noun. Dubai is an expensive city.
 We can use two or more adjectives together. She’s a beautiful young lady.

A. Read the text: A strange dream.


I had a very weird dream last night. I was in an enormous forest with my Friends of my childhood and it was
getting dark. Suddenly, there was a beautiful gray raccoon in the middle of the forest.
Then, there were lots of brown raccoons, but they were scared and they started running.
My friends and I tried to understand why. And then we saw a really strange big animal
coming out of the bushes, it was like a dinosaur with paws and fangs. It tried to eat one of
the raccoons and that’s why the raccoons were scared. Then, the animal saw us. We ran
and ran at the moment the animal came close to me. My mother turned the lights on
because she heard me screaming. It was just a dream, but I was horrified.

“ his area is very Cosmopolitan and that’s why I
love it. When I first came to England in 1986, I
thought it would be like New York, but it was much
quieter. I didn’t know anybody and I wanted to go
home.
I came here to study business at college. First I had a
restaurant. Now I run this florist’s shop. My
customers come from so many different cultures – I
learn something new every day.
What I like about England is that Things are more
organized here. I’m a British citizen now.
When I go back to Turkey, I see how I’ve changed.
Life in Turkey is faster and more hectic than here. I
would like to go back to Istanbul one day. But for
now, I love London. I’m married and I have a
daughter, Ceren. I wouldn’t think of living anywhere
else.”

GRAMMAR: SUPERLATIVE FORMS OF THE ADJECTIVES
Adjectives with one syllable High Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
Add -est
Adjectives that end in –y Ugly This is the ugliest town I’ve ever visited.
Change the –y to i and add -est.
One syllable ending in one vowel and Hot Maracaibo is the hottest city in Venezuela.

Adjectives with two or more syllables Polluted Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in India.
Use most or least before the adjective.
Dangerous Oxygen is the least dangerous of all gases.
