Nominal Clauses
NC’s can be classified according to their form in different categories:
a. That-clause: They didn’t tell me that he was here .
Finite-Clauses
b. Dependant- Interrogative- Clause (WH-):
They didn’t tell me when he would be here
c. To-infinitive Clause: They will tell you to be here
early.
Non-Finite Clauses
b. -ing-clause: Telling lies is wrong
NC’s can have different functions in the sentence- the same functions
a noun phrase performs:
a. Subject: Whether we need it is a different matter.
b. Direct object: I don’t know whether we need it.
c. Subject Complement: The problem is whether we need it .
d. Adjectival Complement : I’m not sure whether we need it .
e. Prepositional object: The decision must depend on whether
we need it .
f. Appositive: That question, whether we need it, has not yet
been considered.
