Cubes Cuboids Surface Area Nets PDF

This document defines prisms, cuboids, cubes and their nets. It states that a prism has a consistent cross-section and volume equals the area of the base times the height. A cuboid is a prism with a rectangular base, and a cube is a cuboid with all sides being squares. The formula for the surface area of a cuboid is derived. Nets are two-dimensional templates that can be folded to form three-dimensional shapes. Examples of nets are provided for cubes and other solids. Readers are instructed to complete exercises practicing these concepts.

Chapters 1.25 and 2.

25: Cubes, Cuboids, Nets and Surface Area

Objectives:
 Know the definition of a prism, of a cuboid and of a cube
 Understand how the formula for the surface area of a cuboid is derived and
memorize this formula
 Know how to draw nets of solids, such as cuboids, tetrahedrons, square based
pyramids and prims

1. Prims, Cubes and Cuboids:

Definition 1 (Prism): A prism is a 3D solid in which is cross section will always be the same
shape.
Typical prisms are shown in Figure 1 below:

Figure 1: Prisms
Therefore, a prism is fully determined by its height (the edge perpendicular on the cross
section) and by its base (the cross section).
Using our definition of Volume from Chapter 18, we deduce that the volume of any prism is
given by:

(1) Volume of a Prism  Area of the base  Height

Definition 2 (Cuboid and Cube): A cuboid (or parallelepiped) is a prism in which the base is a
rectangle. A cuboid with all six faces squares is called a cube.
From this definition it follows that all faces of a cuboid are rectangles.

1
A typical cuboid and cube are shown in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2: A cuboid and a cube.

Figure 3: A cuboid
For a cuboid with length L, width w and height h as shown in Figure 3, we remember from
Chapter 18 that:

Volume (Cuboid)=L  w  h and

(2)
Surface Area (Cuboid)=2  L  w+2  h  w+2  L  h
The formula for the surface area of a cuboid ( 22 above) can be found as we did in Chapter 18,
or it can be obtained using nets.
Definition 3: A net of a solid (say cuboid) is a two dimensional shape which can be folded (back)
to obtain that solid (cuboid).
Therefore, a net of a solid is the unfolding of that solid into its two dimensional surface.
Examples:
Do the exercises on Exercise Set 25.2 in Book 1.

2. Nets:
a) Cubes:
Below we show the net of a cube:

Figure 4: One net of a cube

There are in total 11 nets of a cube. Two other such nets are shown below:

Figure 5: Two other nets of a cube.

Can you draw two more nets of a cube?
b) Other shapes:
Nets of other shapes can be drawn in a similar way.
One net of the triangular prism is drawn to its right. Draw one more net of this prism.

3
Examples:
1. Do the problems from exercise sets 25.1 and 25.2 of Book 2.

2. Solve the following two problems:
