Ce470 Lab2 Sol PDF

This document contains a laboratory assignment with 4 problems involving the design strength calculations of various steel structural members under different loading conditions and connection configurations using Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Strength Design (ASD) specifications. The problems include a C12x30 beam, a double angle tension member, a W16x45 beam connected to plates, and a PL 5/8x10 tension member connected with bolts. Design strengths and allowable strengths are to be calculated for each problem under the given conditions.

CE-470 Laboratory Assignment

Problem 1: A C12x30 is connected with 1-in. diameter bolts in each flange, as shown in Fig. 1.If
Fy =50 ksi, Fu =65 ksi, and Ae=0.9An, compute the following.
a) The design strength for LRFD
b) The allowable strength for ASD

Problem 2: A double angle tension member, 2L 3x2x1/4 LLBB, of an A36 steel is subjected to a
dead load of 12 kips and a live load of 36 kips. It is connected to a gusset plate with 3/4-in.-
diameter bolts through the long legs. Does this member have enough strength? Assume that
Ae=0.85An.

a) Use LRFD.
b) Use ASD.

Problem 3: A W16x45 of A992 steel is connected to a plate at each flange as shown on the Fig.
3. Determine the nominal strength based on the net section as follows:

a) Using Equation for shear lag factor, U, from AISC Table D3.1.
b) Use the alternative value from the table.

Problem 4: The tension member shown in Fig. 4 is PL 5/8x10, and the steel is A36. The bolts are
7/8-in. in diameter.

a) Determine the design strength for LRFD

b) Determine the allowable strength for ASD.
