Paraphrasing Exercise

Directions: On a separate piece of paper, write a paraphrase of each of the following passages.
Try not to look back at the original passage.

1. "The Antarctic is a major cold force on our world, just as sun is the source of our heat and has
huge control of the atmosphere," [ Jacques] Cousteau said to the camera. "Antarctic cold sea
water combines north with hot tropical water and its booms tend to cool the surface water and our
environment. Nevertheless, human activity has undermined the instability of this controlling
mechanism" (from "Captain Cousteau" Audubon (May 1990);17.

2. The 20's were the years where alcohol was contradictory to the rule and the legislation became a
terrible idea since everybody understood that a nearby bar might have liquor. It was the years
when organized crime controlled the city, and police were unable to stop this. Though jazz has
spread over the world, classical music has been overlooked, and the heroes of the youngsters have
been Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie. The flapper was raised in the twenties.
She symbolized America's split with the past with her bobbed hair and short skirts, maybe more

3. Three-fourths are triggered of more than 1000 cycling accidents each year. Half of the victims
was students of school age. A research has shown that using a motorcycle casco will reduce the
risk of head injury by 85%. A bicycle helmet removes the impact and cushions the brain in an

4. Matisse is the greatest painter to present the audience ever. He's the most believable of all
contemporary artists, if you embrace the feeling that the wind is important, and that oranges scent
is key for quiet life. "Casba Gate," the famed gateway to the sultan's palace, is depicted by Bab el
Aassa, the south wall of the capital. With the most vibrant gray figure in art history, Matisse has
scrubbed coats of gold, aqua, violet and rose perfect. It's a Tangier day, including a discreet

5. While the Sears Tower has been perhaps the biggest achievement of skyscraper architise so far, it
is doubtful that architect and engineers would stop their quest for the world's highest building.
How far can the building go? The issue. Structural engineer William LeMessurier built a
skyscraper that is almost half a kilometer double the height of the Sears Tower. And the Designer
Robert Sobel claims that with the latest technologies there is a 500-story structure. Ron
