Kaajma Cover Block Brochure

The document discusses fibre reinforced concrete spacers used in construction. It describes the unique design of Kaajma spacers which are reinforced with polypropylene fibres and embedded with non-shrink grout for strength. A variety of spacer types and sizes are offered to suit different project needs. Concrete spacers are necessary to provide the specified concrete cover over rebar for protection from corrosion and fire. Precast concrete spacers provide more uniform quality than site-made spacers and help ensure the intended concrete cover is achieved.

Reinforced with polypropylene fibres which acts as secondary reinforcement and

embedded with non- shrink cementitious grout to provide rock like hardness.

Fibres aid in achieving excellent bond among cement, fine aggregate & coarse
aggregate.

 Maximum Options

In total we offer 15 types of cover blocks/ concrete spacers in square shape, circular
w/o wire & circular with GI Binding wire catering all your project requirements.

 Excellent Strength

Compressive Strength not less than 50MPa. No climatic deformation observed.

Manufactured under strict supervision & quality control.

Higher grade spacers can be manufactured on order basis.

 Excellent Quality

Made in accordance with BS 7973 Specifications & under strict quality control.

 Accuracy & Precision

Casted to perfection. Accurate size & finish.

 Perfect Bonding

Concrete to Concrete bonding is excellent due to homogeneity material properties. No

splitting and micro cracks develop between interfacing fresh concrete and cover
blocks/ spacers.

 Ease in Identification

Each spacer/ cover blocks are unique in shape & size with marked cover/ spacer size.
What are concrete spacers?

Spacers are used to ensure that the concrete cover specified for structures and
structural elements made of reinforced concrete is adhered to, both before and during
concreting.

Concrete spacers are small blocks that are used to create a space or gap between
rebar matrix and formwork/ shuttering/ ground thus providing protective cover to the
reinforcement. They are essential so as concrete can flow under the rebars uniformly
and eventually rebar is embeded completely in concrete. Adequately embeded rebars
are protected from environmental damages such as corrosion. In case of fire, rebras
too get protected due to adequate cover.

Why concrete spacers have become inevitable in construction?

 To protect rebar from environmental effects such as cossosion.

 To provide thermal insulation, which protects the rebar from fire.
 Spacers ensure adequate bond area so that stresses from concrete are
transferred to steel.
 To give rebar sufficient embedding to enable them to be strssed without
slipping.
 Inadequate cover leads into cossosion of the rebar & will ultimately result in
premature failure of the structure.
 Thus using spacers/ cover blocks enhances the life of the structure significantly
without adding much to the cost.

How to use concrete spacers?

 Concrete spacers or cover blocks are to be used as proposed by design

engineer.
 Spacer positioning is based primarily on acceptable deflection at maximum
loading. Therefore, thinner rebars require more spacers than larger diamter
rebars.
 Correct grade, type & size of concrete spacer is to be used as proposed in
structural drawings.
 Most importanltly, the postioning of concrete spacers is most importatnt so that
they serve theit intended purpose. Spacers should be positioned as per
structural drawings and respective codal provisions.
 Impropoer spacing among the spacers will lead to revrsible stresses in the
rebars which will eventually damage the cover blocks due to fatigue and will
result into unwanted defletion of the rebars.

Why no Plastic Spacers?

 Plastic & concrete do not bond properly. Hence the very purpose of providing
spacer is hampered.
 Studies have shown corroded bar at the plastic spacer interjunctions.
 PVC spacers must not be used as they cannot form a bond with the hardened
concrete and provoke a water infiltration along the contact surface of spacer
and concrete. (Extract from German Association of Gas and Hydraulic
Engineers regulations).

Why pre-cast concrete spacers?

 In accordance with BS 8110-1 concrete spacers shall not be made on the

construction site.
 Spacers made at site are not in uniform in size, shape & thickness.
 Inferior & non-uniform quality of site made concrete.
 Pre-cast concrete spacers are made in factory under supervision and strict
quality control.
 Concrete poured into dedicted special molds which ensures uniform shape &
size.
MULTIPLE COVER SPACERS
Multiple Cover Spacers are widely used in construction industry. They save time,
money and effort as inventory is controlled by avoiding variable type single spacers.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Positioning of spacers/ cover blocks is based primarily on acceptable deflection at

maximum loading. Therefore, thinner rebars require more spacers than larger
diameter rebars.
Below are guidelines for recommended quantities for spacers based on rebar size and
application

CORRECT COVER

Correct cover to reinforcing steel not only affects the durability of the concrete but also
the extent and severity of cracking under working loads. In conditions of fire the
amount of cover also governs the time scale before damage to the reinforced concrete
elements occur. Attention to correct detailing practices, which include making
allowances for permissible tolerances of both reinforcing and form-work, the
maintenance of good construction practices and the specification of and use of the
correct number and type of reinforcing cover devices will ensure that the rebar can be
placed and maintained in the position intended.
Normal cover required should be clearly shown on all relevant drawings. The amount
of nominal cover is dependent upon the size and type of the structural member, the
environmental conditions to which it will be exposed (including fire), the class of
concrete and the type and size of reinforcing bar which will be used.
Actual cover obtained on site should never be less than the minimum nominal cover
specified by the relevant authorities, nor more than the minimum, plus variations as
specified.
Advantages of Providing adequate cover:
1. Ensures protection of the Rebar from the environment by providing a physical
barrier.
2. Ensures that concrete completely encircles Rebar allowing passivation.
3. Ensures that concrete completely encircles Rebar allowing complete bond to
develop.
4. Allows the Rebar to assume position and act as designed.
5. Prevents staining.
6. Provides a time lag in cases of fire.
The engineer and detailer should specify and schedule the correct number and type
of cover devices required.
