I am writing to express my interest in applying for the position in “Junior Researcher Action-
oriented research for low-input crop diversification”. I am currently in the last phase of my master
study and I am eager to pursue an academic career in the field of agroecology after graduation.
I have a strong interest in agroecology, particularly on its set of practices that rely on beneficial
biological interaction to reduce the agrochemicals. Although it needs intensive knowledges, I
personally find it challenging and fascinating. Moreover, since the conventional agriculture (high-
input farming) has been widely considered as significant contributor to environmental
degradation and climate change, the need for agricultural practices that are productive as well as
sustainable have been increasingly over the last decades. This issue can be utilized by
agroecologist to gain momentum developing more scientific researches. Therefore, I am eager to
learn more these subjects.
I took many opportunities to study agroecology related topics since I started my MSc of Plant
Science in Wageningen University and Research. I designed my study program to revolve around
functional diversity and plant physiology. For the full list of my courses, please refer to the record
of the academic transcript. I believe that a better understanding of plant physiology is required
to support agroecological practices. Therefore, besides having specialization at natural resource
management, I also decided to have a minor specialization at plant adaptation in controlled
environment. My major thesis was also combination topic between agroecology and plant
physiology. It was about the utilizing the vegetable fern (Diplazium esculentum) as secondary crop
for permanent intercropping with oil palm. This thesis was the first study that tried cultivating
the vegetable fern in oil palm plantation.
Currently, I am finishing a minor thesis that also still related to agroecological practices in oil palm
plantation. More precisely, I am working in the analysis of yield constrained of organic oil palm
smallholders in Sierra Leone, Sub-Sahara Africa. Both in major and minor thesis, I got the valuable
opportunity to develop my statistical skills, since these projects were conducted using R to mine,
analyse, and visualize data. I believe this skill could be a great asset for this position.
Indeed, I realise that I am still a newcomer as a junior researcher in this field. Yet, with my
knowledge and experiences, I am confident that I am capable to complete my responsible tasks
in this position effectively. Moreover, I have acquired excellent project organization skills during
my bachelor and master study that shaped me to be multi-tasking, high initiative, critical thinking
and high responsible either as a leader or a team member.
I wish I could be a part of team that bring the principles of agroecology into action. I have a strong
ambition to pursue an academic career as PhD student and researcher who can follow up the
finding of my major thesis which was about to implement the principles of agroecology in the oil
palm plantation. I believe that experience and knowledge that I will obtain from this project will
help me to achieve this ambition. Thank you very much for your kind consideration. I look forward
to hearing your positive response.
