Geometric Design of Highway: Ned University of Engineering and Technology

This document summarizes the geometric design of the highway alignment of Mokhi Nala and the design of Corridor D5 using AutoCAD Civil 3D software. It describes the study area, design criteria, and 10 step methodology used in the software: 1) Create Surface, 2) Add Surface Properties, 3) Create Alignment, 4) Set Alignment Properties and Geometry, 5) Create Corridor, 6) Set Corridor Parameters and Rebuild Corridor, 7) Create Profile and Cross Section, 8) Add Materials, 9) Compute Materials, and 10) Outputs. The outputs provide alignments, horizontal and vertical curves, and calculations to help with project execution.

1. ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study is to learn and understand AutoCAD Civil 3d
software for working, analyze and design of Civil engineering project especially
Transportation project. Contour map after survey was generates the surface for
the designing and analysis. Alignments are set to build corridor and Sample lines
produce to compute the amount of cuts and fills and results in quantities, after
that conclusion will be given by in the form of working Drawing.

2. INTRODUCTION:
MOKHI NALA:

• MOKHI Nala is situated in Karachi started from Khameso Goth and end near
at Garden City.

• It is about 9 km in distance.

• Having major and minor curve throughout.

• During survey it is found to be lot of encroachment along with its alignment

which is a major problem to set its alignment.

• Somehow to take this consideration into the account and uses simple
technique to build the design on it.

3. OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT
The main objective of this study is to learn the software of AUTOCAD Civil 3d and
design and analyze the transportation project.

4. DESCRIPTION OF SOFTWARE
AUTOCAD CIVIL 3D

It is the software for building information modeling (BIM) solution for civil
engineering; helps in project teams deliver higher-quality transportation,
land development, and environmental projects faster.

In the past, engineers used to perform earth work calculations manually; this
usually takes a lot of time and effort in addition to the human's errors expected.
Using civil 3D, such calculations can be performed easily within minutes. In
addition, civil 3D produces printable and neat reports that can be presented to
key people in your company.
What are exactly the points covered in this software:
This software focuses on the following civil 3D skills:

 Creation of Points and Surfaces

 Adjustment of Surfaces
 Creation of Surface Profile
 Creation of Sample Lines
 Performing Calculations such as Cut and Fill (Earth Work)
 Performing Calculations such as Pavement Layers quantity Estimation
 Understanding different method - and concept - of Take Off Criterion

4. METHODOLOGY
The work was divided into the following steps:

4.1 IDENTIFICATION AND STUDY AREA:

  MOKHI NALA AND CORRIDOR D5:
Following are the two projects taken into account whereas due to unavailability of
contour map of mokhi nala so it is completed with the alignment only. But
Corridor D5 completed with all necessary steps of construction made in Civil 3d
software with complete detail.

4.2 Visual Inspection
It is the preliminary investigation and it can be done by having contour maps and
dedicated corridor. From the visual inspection it can be found that the pictorial
images taken from the Google earth which produce coordinates along with them
are helpful to align the section.

4.3 DESIGN CRITERIA

DESIGN SPEED:

40 mi/hr approx. 65 km/hr

NUMBER OF LANES:

2 lanes
WIDTH OF THE LANE:

Approx. 10 ft
OFFSET FROM THE CORRIDOR:

Approx. 3 ft

4.4 Steps of Working

1. Create Surface

2. Add Surface Properties

3. Create Alignment

4. Set Alignment Property and Alignment Geometry

7
5. Create Corridor

6. Set Corridor Parameters and Rebuild Corridor

7. Create Profile and Cross Section

8. Add Materials

9. Compute Materials

10. Outputs

1. Create Surface
A surface is a three-dimensional geometric representation of an area of
land, or, in the case of volume surfaces, is a difference or composite
between two surface areas. Surfaces are made up of triangles or grids,
which are created when Autodesk Civil 3D connects the points that make
up the surface data.

2. Add Surface Properties

8
3. Create Alignment

9
4. Set Alignment Property and Alignment Geometry
10
5. Create Corridor

11
7. Create Profile and Cross Section

12
10. Outputs

5. OBSERVATION AND CALCULATIONS:
After observation, calculation can be automatically build
from the software in the form of working drawing which
will further provide to the site for Execution.

6. Conclusion and recommendation:

Form observations and calculations outcomes are generated which gives
Alignments with different chainage, horizontal and vertical curve with length and
radius helps in execution at site and provided to the related companies or firms.
