Vroom Expectancy Motivation Theory

1) The document discusses two major theories of motivation: Vroom's expectancy theory and Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. 2) Vroom's expectancy theory states that employees are motivated when they believe increased effort will lead to increased performance and rewards. Maslow's theory proposes that people are motivated to fulfill basic physiological and safety needs before pursuing higher level needs. 3) The theories are compared, noting that Maslow's considers a variety of individual factors while Vroom's focuses more on linking effort to outcomes. However, both aim to understand what motivates employee behavior and decision making.

Ans 3a) Motivation is all about the needs, desire and wants that come from the

word motive which exactly explains motivation as a phenomenon of psychology

which needs an incentive framed plan that can handle the needs and the wants of
people. The theories of motivation that are mostly recognized include Vroom's
expectancy theory and Maslow's need theory which has a great impact on the
employees of any organization.

Vroom expectancy motivation theory:

Vroom's expectancy theory leads the individuals to behave in a specific way based
on the outcomes or rewards that they expect to receive on their behaviors. This
means that the workers only offer their best service when they are motived
because their effort is equal to the rewards. As vrooms expectancy theory includes
expectancy, instrumentality, and valence as its factors.

Expectancy:

It is the measure that allows the employee to think that there is a direct
relationship between their efforts and their performance. That an increase in
efforts will lead to an increase in performance.

Instrumentality:

The employee believes that when their performance increases their outcome
increases as well. When they perform well and according to the organization goal
their rewards will increase.

Valence:

Over here the employees start thinking is that reward desirable. Were my efforts
and my performance equal to the outcome received? They start checking their
rewards values. In which they can be + or -. When a valence is negative or – means
that the reward was not matching to his needs but in contrast when it comes to
positive or + which means that the rewards = needs. So that’s why it's from the job
of managers in every organization should know the needs of their employees.

Maslow's need theory:

Maslow's need theory contains three types of needs one is basic needs,
psychological needs, and self-fulfillment needs. Under these types of needs, the
basic need includes physiological and safety needs. The psychological needs
include the esteem and belonging and love needs. The self-fulfillment needs
include the self-actualization.

In psychological need includes the basic needs that anyone would be looking for.
For e.g. (food, shelter, water).

In safety need employees are looking for the feeling of security inside an
organization.

In social needs, they will be looking for love and belonging that is present in any
organization. They look forward to being loved and to be accepted.

In self-esteem need, it is about the need to be recognized, to have power, and to

have prestige in front of all the other employees.

In self-actualization, it is about creativity and growth needs.

Compare both the theories:

employees.

On the other hand, they both are theories of motivation which motivates the
employees to work for a specific goal. However, the unsatisfied needs effects
related to vrooms expectancy theory are understood by Maslow's need theory.in
which vroom says that unmet demands is a need that must be fulfilled by this the
individuals are motivated in which they start making decision that are concerned
for a specific task to be undertaken in a way that is understood as satisfying the
needs of those individuals. When the motivation is high this will show that there
are goals that are quantified.

Ans 4) Abbas and Salwa situations are different as they work with different kinds
of managers. In which Salwa's manager Jalal is an active manager who everyone
respects his style of a relaxed management and his attitude that is friendly. In
which I feel that Salwa is motivated since she works under a manager like Jalal.
On the other hand, Abbas work with a manager who has believes that repeating a
job over and over again is the best way to master in a job. In order to keep Abbas
and Salwa's satisfaction the best motivation theory best for them is the Top-Down
approach of job design. In which the job rotation is the best option from top-
down approach. In the case of Salwa maintaining the job rotation will help to
increase her experience, knowledge and dealing with challenges. Through this her
motivation will stay boosted up. In the case of Salwa vrooms expectancy theory
will help to keep her motivated because she is going to receive a bonus of $75 if
she achieve the aim of selling 4 ounces of oil for $ 35 for the next coming week. As
she is motivated to work hard through finding a good recipe of achieving the aim
in order to get her bonus. Through expectancy theory she will have excess money
to pay for her tuition fees in a more comfortable way. However, in Abbas's case
job rotation will be very useful for him. As doing the same thing every day Abbas
is demotivated and if Saa'eed starts implementing job rotation Abbas will feel
motivated to do his job and even motivated to come to work every day and leave it
with a smile on his face like Salwa. As well in the case of Abbas there is an act of
unfairness as one the employee Dunia just worked for 3 months and she receives
more salary than he does and the both do the same job. So if Saa'eed started
implementing equity theory of motivation in which it talks about the fairness and
justice that people in an organization strive for. So if he is fair in treating all his
employees this will help to keep the motivation for all the employees and
especially Abbas.
