CARDINAL NUMBERS 1.000-10. 00 0

In this lesson we are going to learn cardinal numbers from a thousand to ten
thousand.
Let’s start with a thousand.

hiljadu – thousand
dve hiljade – two thousand
tri hiljade – three thousand
četiri hiljade – four thousand
pet hiljada – five thousand
šest hiljada – six thousand
sedam hiljada – seven thousand
osam hiljada – eight thousand
devet hiljada – nine thousand
deset hiljada – ten thousand

These numbers are cardinal numbers and they tell us how many of something
there is by showing us the quantity. A cardinal number answers the question How
many? or Koliko? in Serbian. Their main use is counting - we use them to count
objects, people, abstract things and so on.
How do you say two thousand?
Dve hiljade.

How do you say six thousand?
Šest hiljada.
How about nine thousand?
Devet hiljada.
How about ten thousand?
Deset hiljada

Notice that the thousands in Serbian are made of a single digit cardinal number
and a thousand, just like in English.
Example: četiri hiljade (four thousand) is made of the number četiri (four) and
hiljade (a thousand) which is četiri hiljade in Serbian.
Example: pet hiljada (five thousand) consists of the number pet (five) and hiljada
(a thousand).
It’s the same for all the other numbers. One thing to remember: always write
them separately as two words like šest hilljada, for example (six thousand).

When using thousands to count in Serbian they will look like this:
Example: hiljadu (one thousand) has the -u ending
Example: dvehiljade, tri hiljade and četiri hiljade (two thousand, three thousand
and four thousand) in Serbian have the -e ending (as in hiljade). Note that the
number 2000 (dve hiljade) is not the number “dva” and the word “hiljade”.
Hiljadu (thousand) is a feminine noun in Serbian and the number dva needs to be
in the feminine form which is dve. Therefore, we have dve hiljade (two thousand).
Example: pet, šest, sedam, osam, devet and deset hiljada (five, six, seven, eight,
nine and ten thousand) have the -a endings (hiljada).

There are no sound alternations with any of the thousands in Serbian
