1 Using NetAct

1 Top-level User Interface

The Top-level User Interface (TLUI) presents a graphical,

hierarchical view to the whole network or to a part of the
network by using views that are linked together. Also the TLUI
acts as a platform to start the other Nokia NetAct applications.

1. Start the Top-level User Interface. What is the name of

the view you see?

Solution:

2. Display the existing views in the system and open one of

them. Afterwards open the “Default.vie” again.

3. Where can you find the explanation of different colours

and symbols you see in the TLUI?

Solution:

4. Find a managed object with at least one major alarm.

Find a managed object, which is unlocked.
Find a managed object, which has a ´non-operational´
Object State.

Solution:

5. Some symbols in a view have a shadow. This means they

have a link to another view (subview). Open a subview. What
do you see? Go back to the previous view.

Solution:

6. How to select multiple objects in the view and show

their popup menu? (Note: the name of the popup menu
should be “Multiple Objects”.) Are the contents the
same as the popup menu contents of one single object?
a) If you select objects of the same object class as
Multiple Objects:
 Yes  No
Why?

b) If you select objects of a different object class as

Multiple Objects:
 Yes  No
Why?

Solution:

7. Attach a note to a managed object. How does the view

object indicate that a note is attached?

Solution:

8. Lock & Unlock multiple WCELs at the same time. How

do you do this and which steps happen on the system
then?

Solution:

9. Reset a WBTS directly from the TLUI. How do you do

this and which steps happen on the system then?

1.2 Managed Object Browser

The Managed Object Browser (MOB) is directly linked to the

Nokia NetAct database. This gives the user the possibility to
browse the objects in the database as well as perform searches
on objects based on user-defined search criteria.

1. Start the Managed Object Browser. Navigate as deep

into the object hierarchy as possible. What is the most
low-level object you can find?

Solution:

2. Configure the Managed Object Browser in the way, that

the most low-level object is not displayed anymore.

Solution:

4. How many BCFs/WBTSs have an object state "Non-

operational"?

Solution:

5. How many BCFs/WBTSs are located under one

particular BSC/RNC?
(Hint: use % as wildcard)

1.3 Working Set Manager

With the Working Set Manager, saved collections of managed objects

(Working Sets) can be created, modified and browsed. Working Sets can
be manual or criteria-based. With drag & drop they can be handled like
single managed objects in other Nokia NetAct applications.

1. Start the Working Set Manager. Do Working Sets already exist in the
system? Are these manual or criteria-based working sets?

Solution:

2. Create a manual working set containing all BTSs/WBTSs

belonging to one existing maintenance regions (MR). Save your
working set.
(Hint: Use the Managed Object Browser to Drag & Drop Managed
Objects into your new Working Set.)

Solution:

3. Check if your new Working Set is listed in the Working Set Manager
main window.

Solution:

4. Drag & Drop your Working Set into an other NetAct application, e.g.
into the Managed Object Browser or the Top-level User Interface. What
happens?

Solution:

5. Create now a criteria based working set, also for the BTS/WBTSs
belonging to the same maintenance region (MR).
(NOTE: The creation of a criteria-based Working Set is done with
the Managed Object Browser (not with the Working Set Manager).
– After creation, the new criteria-based Working Set is then listed
in the Working Set Manager.

Solution:

6. Check if your new Working Set is listed in the Working Set Manager
main window.

Solution:

7. Drag & Drop your Working Set into an other NetAct application, e.g.
into the Managed Object Browser or the Top-level User Interface. What
happens?

Solution:

8. Compare the two created working sets. Do they have the same
contents?
 Yes  No
9. Assume, that in one week, additional BTSs/WBTSs are integrated
into the Maintenance Region you used for your Working Sets.
Assume also, that your Working Set are not changed at all during
that time. Do the both Working Sets then still have the same
contents?
 Yes  No
