1 Course description
Course name OSS5.1 Fault Management Essentials
Level Intermediate
Target group Network Surveillance personnel performing fault monitoring of
BSS/RAS/CORE/VAS network via NetAct

Objectives After the training, the participant will be able to:

• Apply best practice in using the NetAct Fault
Management applications in their own
operational environment
• Use NetAct Alarm History to proactively identify
alarm trends in the network – for example: which
alarm numbers have occurred most frequently
over a certain period; which network elements
are generating the most alarms; which alarms
are still unacknowledged or active.
• Understand how alarm flow can be reduced
using OSS tools (alarm flow: informing delay,
correlation, reclassification, filtering)
• Group all alarms related to a common problem
together, and identify the root cause of the fault
• Evaluate the likely effect upon service, and
prioritise the fault accordingly
• Where possible successfully fix the fault
remotely
• If it is not possible to fix the fault remotely,
decide on an appropriate course of action – for
example, fix locally, or escalate to another
department
• Understand what essential information should be
included when creating, using, and closing
trouble tickets

Duration 2 days*
* duration can be extended if necessary to cover more network
element specific content and remote troubleshooting scenarios

Service Description

2 Learning element objectives

2.1 NetAct Monitor Functionality

After completing this learning element, the participant should be able to:
Theory:
• List the common and optional features in NetAct Monitor
functionality
• Explain how alarm trigger and alarm forwarding can be used
• Understand the 3GPP and Multi-Vendor Fault Management
functionality in NetAct

2.2 Fault Management Best Practice

After completing this learning element, the participant should be able to:
Theory and practical:
• Apply best practice in using the NetAct Fault Management
applications in their own operational environment
• Use the full functionality of NetAct Alarm Monitor & Top Level User
Interface (TLUI) applications:
− Re-configuring the alarm scope via menu and drag and drop
− Re-configure Alarm Monitor to identify alarms that are
related to the same common cause
− Starting element managers directly from the TLUI
− Display and recognise correlated alarms
− Enter operator-specific instructions in modifiable alarm
manual pages
− et cetera

Service Description

2.3 Fault Management Analysis and Reporting

After completing this learning element, the participant will be able to:
Theory and practical:
• Use NetAct Alarm History to proactively identify alarm trends in the
network – for example: which alarm numbers have occurred most
frequently over a certain period; which network elements are
generating the most alarms; which alarms are still
unacknowledged or active.
• Use NetAct reporting functionality to generate reports on Fault
Management for analysis by Technical Management or other
persons

2.4 Alarm Flow Management

After completing this learning element the participant will be able to:
Theory and demonstration:
• Describe how alarm events are sent from the network element to
the management system
• Identify when there is a problem in the management connection
between NetAct and the network elements (alarms not arriving)
• Explain how alarm data inconsistencies can occur and what
applications are available to correct them
• Explain how the alarm flow can be modified both at the network
element and through the management system
• Understand how alarm flow can be reduced using OSS tools
(alarm flow: informing delay, correlation, reclassification, filtering)
• Understand how alarm flow can be reduced using MML or Element
Managers (informing delay, reclassification, blocking)
• Use Maintenance Mode to support planned works
Note: this learning element is only intended to give an overview about
alarm flow management to assist persons performing network
monitoring. If you job role involves the active modification of network
alarm flow please ask about the more detailed OSS Alarm Reduction
Workshop (OSS ALARM REDUCE).

2.5 Alarm Handling Process

This learning element will be run as a trainer led group exercise using a
specific fault scenario and following a systematic process for handling
alarms. After completing this element the participant will be to:
• Understand what tools and information sources are available to
assist in fault finding
• Use the alarm handling tools to group together alarms that are
related to the same common fault
• Identify the network element/s affected, geographic location and
position in the network hierarchy
• Assess the likely impact of the fault on network service
• Classify the fault severity and priority
• Take actions where appropriate to resolve the fault
• Understand when it is appropriate to escalate faults to other
groups (e.g. transmission, technical support group, Nokia or other
vendor)
• Understand what essential information should be included when
creating, using, and closing trouble tickets

2.6 Remote Troubleshooting Scenarios

This learning element will involve a number of troubleshooting fault
cases. The exact nature of these fault cases will depend on the testbed
configuration and the job roles of the participants but can include a
combination of hardware, software, and transmission faults. Given a
series of practical fault cases, the participant should be able to perform
remote troubleshooting using the most appropriate tools:
Practical:
• Group all alarms related to a common problem together, and
identify the root cause of the fault
• Evaluate the likely effect upon service, and prioritise the fault
accordingly
• Where possible successfully fix the fault remotely
• If it is not possible to fix the fault remotely, decide on an
appropriate course of action – for example, fix locally, or escalate
to another department
