Background

Drug Abuse has become a problem nowadays and most of the teenagers and youth

today are influenced by different kind of drug abuses. Some may be a user or push to sell drugs
because money is needed. Using of this may involve the mental, social, and psychological

health of a person.

As the main experience of substance misuse regularly begins in immaturity, Study has

shown that cigarette and alcohol consumption is mainly related to drug use.

Definition

According to National Cancer Institute (NCI), the use of illegal drugs or the use of

prescription or over-the-counter drugs for purposes other than those for which they are meant to

be used, or in large amounts. Drug abuse may lead to social, physical, emotional, and job-

related problems.

World Health Organization (WHO) says that refers to the harmful or hazardous use of

psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Psychoactive substance use can

lead to dependence syndrome - a cluster of behavioural, cognitive, and physiological

phenomena that develop after repeated substance use and that typically include a strong desire

to take the drug, difficulties in controlling its use, persisting in its use despite harmful

consequences, a higher priority given to drug use than to other activities and obligations,

increased tolerance, and sometimes a physical withdrawal state.


As the News-Medical Net says, drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of

certain chemicals for the purpose of creating pleasurable effects on the brain. There are over

190 million drug users around the world and the problem has been increasing at alarming rates,

especially among young adults under the age of 30. Apart from the long term damage to the

body drug abuse causes, drug addicts who use needles are also at risk of contracting HIV and

hepatitis B and C infections.
