Superflex Super Hero Small Group

Meeting #2

ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors:

M1: Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental,
social/emotional and physical well-being.
B-SS 6. Use effective collaboration and cooperation skills.

Materials:
o Capes (one per student)
o Superflex Super Frame
o Stickers
o Bags (one pre student)
o Glass Man Candy
o Rock Brain Rocks
o Pictures of Villians and Super Powers
o Super Power Stickers
o Hero of the Day Badges
o Tree and a cat stuffed animal

Procedure:
o Welcome students outside the classroom.
o Explain expectations for behavior in the classroom.
o Be kind.
o Be respectful.
o Listen right away.
o If groups members cannot follow the rules and handle meeting in the
playroom then we will have to find another space to meet.
o Counselors are watching and handing out stickers to students making
good choices and following directions. At the end of each group session
the group will pick one super friend to get their picture taken with the
Super Flex Super Frame and send it to their teacher and parents.
o Students will receive their capes as they walk into the classroom. Remind students that
the cape stays in the group and they will get to take it home after the last group
meeting.
o Have students practice the Super Flex motto “Kind words (hands point towards mouth).
Gentle hands (stretch arms out to each side). Strong minds (flex your bicep muscles
while pointing to your head).” Repeat motto several times throughout the group.
o Option to have students repeat the motto in different voices (Ex/ whisper voice, squeaky
voice, just mouthing the words, loud voice)
o Remind students of last week and how there is a super flexible Super Flex living inside
each group member’s brain. Remind students of the Super Flex pipe cleaner and the Mr.
Rigid popsicle stick. Compare and contrast the two with the group.
o Super Flex is flexible, can bend to any problem they are faced with.
o Mr. Rigid is not flexible. When a problem comes his way, he can’t bend to it. He
just breaks.
o Set expectations for today’s activity – Today’s Super Mission to Save the Day
o Counselors are watching for students making good choices to earn stickers.
o We do not run inside.
o Follow directions/listen.
o We are all working together, so we need to stick together as a team.

Activity
Students will work together and go on a Super Hero Mission to find the Villains and save the
kitten stuck in a tree.
o Set up the mission. Students will have to face and defeat two villains in order to save the
kitten stuck in the tree and earn their Hero of the Day badge.
o Tell students we are looking for a Villain named Glass Man. Students will search around
the classroom for Glass Man. Place Glass Man by the window. If students need a clue,
tell them to look outside and see what they find.
o Glass Man
o Once Glass Man is found, have students sit on the carpet and explain who Glass
Man is.
o He gets upset very quickly.
o Maybe someone else gets to do something we wanted to do.
o The degree of the upset does not match the seriousness of the problem
o Usually thinks things are not fair
o How can you defeat glass man?
o Stop and think about the problem
o Tell yourself to take a break and walk away
o Ask for help
o Take a deep breath to calm down
o Pass out the Glass Man candy and use the candy to teach a grounding technique.
o Using the glass man candy, have students describe the candy. Is it
smooth? What does it smell like? What does it sound like when you break
it? How does it taste?
o Congratulate students on defeating one villain, but remind them we still have one more
before we can save the day.
o Tell students we are looking for a Villain named Rock Brain. Students will search around
the classroom for rock brain. If they are having trouble finding him share a clue with
them.
o Rock brain loves to visit brains. Big brains. Small brains. Pink brains. Even
pictures of brains.
o Rock Brain
o He gets you stuck on your own thoughts, answers, and solutions.
o He gets you to do what only what you want to do, without thinking about the
group.
o How can you defeat rock brain?
o Be flexible
o Agree to follow someone else’s plan
o Rock the opposite
o Pass out a small rock to each student to represent rock brain. This rock will
remind you to rock the opposite.
o If time allows, students can paint and decorate their rocks.
o Congratulate and celebrate that students saved the kitten in the tree. They have each
earned their Hero of the Day Badge.
o Students have also earned two super powers, Focus Tron and Cool Cucumber.
o Focus Tron
o Enables you to focus and so your brain can stay connected to what you are
doing.
o Cool Cucumber
o Helps you stay cool.
o Pass out super power stickers for students to add to their capes.
o Students can put their glass man candy and rocks into their bags.

Close Out
o Celebrate the student who gets chosen to take a picture with the SuperFlex Super
Frame. Remind students that this will be each week, so there are plenty of chances for
everyone to get to take a picture with the SuperFlex Super Frame.
o Have the students repeat the motto and wrap up.
