Learning Outcome:
After learning this course, student should be able to:
Describe the fundamental parts of electrical drives including converter, electrical machine and load.
Explain the operating principles of induction machines, synchronous machines and dc machines
Explain basic principal, construction and operation of Transformer. Construct phasor diagram and
equivalent circuit of transformer.
Construct characteristic diagrams for different loads for analysis of electrical drives. Machines.

D-C Machines :
Principle of operation – types – construction – winding – EMF equation – characteristics of d-c
2 generators – losses and efficiency – d-c motor operation and types – back EMF – torque - 7
characteristics of motors – speed control of series and shunt motors – d-c shunt motor starter.
Transformer :
Principle of operation –construction – types - EMF equation – voltage and current
3 transformation ratio – transformer on no load and on load – phase diagram – equivalent circuit 7
- losses and efficiency – regulation – testing – Auto transformer – CT & PT – Three phase
transformer connection.
Induction Motor :
Working principle - types – construction – Torque equation – Torque / slip characteristics –
4 power stages – losses and efficiency – starting of induction motor. Single phase induction 7
motor principle, types and construction – stepper motor.
Synchronous Machines :
Basic operating principle - construction –EMF equation – winding factor – armature reaction -
5 synchronous impedance and equivalent circuit – phase diagram – synchronizing. - Synchronous 5
motor operation - phase diagram – starting – synchronous condenser.
Single Phase Motors:

Principle of operation, split phase, shaded pole and repulsion induction motor, stepper motor,
servomotor (DC & AC Servomotors.)
Drives :
7 Introduction, merits and demerits of electrical drives, Factors affecting selection of electrical 8
drives, classification, DC Machine drives, AC Machine drives.
Practical content
The Practical/term work shall be based on the topics mentioned above and will be defended by the
candidates.
