Dice Game

The document describes creating a dice game where: - The casino owner wants to have a slightly higher chance of winning than players to earn money. - Rolling two six-sided dice results in 36 possible combinations. - The probabilities of rolling each number can be calculated and summed using the multiplication and addition principles. - The owner must set rules so their probability of winning is only slightly higher than a player's probability.

Dice Game (due 4-7)

You are the owner of a casino and you want to come up with a new game for your patrons to play.
However, people will only play your game if they have a good chance of winning. If you and the
player have equal odds of winning, you don’t earn any money in the long run. If your odds are slightly
higher than the player’s, then the player will feel like he has a good chance of winning and you will
still come out slightly ahead and earn money to pay your workers.

You decide that you are going to create a game using two six-sided dice. What rules would you set up
so that the chances of you winning is only slightly higher than the player winning?

Background Information

Each dice has 6 sides. The first thing we need to do in order to find any probabilities is to find the total
number of combinations possible by rolling the dice. Using the multiplication principle:

__________ × __________ = __________ Total number of choices

Dice 1 Dice 2

What are the possible choices? We can make a table to see the choices. We see the choices for dice 1
and dice 2. Each row represents the number you would roll on dice 1 and each column represents the
number you would roll on dice 2. Each blank square in the table represents the value you would roll if
you rolled the number on dice 1 and dice 2. The first square is done for you. If you roll a 1 on dice 1
and a 1 on dice 2, the total would be 2. If you rolled two sixes, then the total would be 12 (both filled
in for you). Fill in the rest of the blanks. How many possible choices are there according to the table?

The addition principle tells us the probability of rolling multiple results. For example. My probability
of rolling a 1 or a 2 is 0.028 + 0.028 = 0.056.

Knowing this, make up rules so that you have a slight advantage over the player. The probability that
you will win should be only slightly higher than the probability the player will win. What does the
player have to roll in order to win? What do you have to roll in order to win? Explain why and show
all calculations. You may use the space below or you can use a separate sheet of paper.
