Ground Stabilisation - Rail Track - Nagykanizsa, Hungary

The document summarizes a case study of using Tensar geogrids to stabilize a rail track embankment in Nagykanizsa, Hungary. Maintenance of the rail track was frequent due to fine particles from the embankment penetrating the ballast layer. To solve this, the existing ballast was removed and a Tensar SS30 geogrid was installed directly on the weak soil before new ballast was added. This stabilized the ballast layer and prevented further mixing of ballast and fine particles, significantly reducing track deformations. The geogrid solution provided long-term stabilization and reduced maintenance costs.

As a short-term measure, monthly maintenance of the railway section in Nagykanizsa was required. However, a
permanent solution was needed to solve the problem of the penetration of fine particles from the embankment
body in to the ballast layer.

Firstly, the solution started with excavation of old ballast layer including 10cm below the standard thickness of the
layer. Then, Tensar SS30 geogrid with a light separation geotextile was installed beneath, directly on the weak soil
and covered with new ballast stone. Stone particles penetrated the apertures of the geogrid and interlocked. With
this mechanism, horizontal movements of the stones, caused by cycle loading, were restrained. The ballast layer
was stabilised and the mixing of ballast stone and the fines from the subgrade was prevented.

After the installation of Tensar geogrid, measurements on the rail track showed a significant reduction of
deformations compared with the situation previously.

The use of Tensar geogrids brings a long-term solution and cost savings are achieved as maintenance of the track
is no long required. The initial investment into the purchase of geosynthetics will be paid back soon and the client
will continue to see the benefits for many years.
