Welding Procedures Warning
Notice

Applicable: All turbines with diesel engine

1. Purpose

This FTI is to inform users regarding warning notice for welding procedures on
gas turbines fitted with diesel engines which have DDEC electronic control
modules installed.

2. Background/Discussion

Control modules, wiring etc have been damaged on units during welding
operations on the gas turbines. Where inadequate precautions were
implemented.

3. Recommendations

After the diesel engine is installed on the gas turbine base, relevant personnel
must be informed of the need to adhere to the requirements of warning notices.
While the turbine is under construction, storage, installation commissioning &
servicing.

Permanent labels shall be displayed in prominent locations for the gas turbine
installation. The wording from the notice will be added to the gas turbine service
manuals.

However, temporary warning notices provided by manufacturing or test dept.

IMPORTANT

WELDING PROCEDURES FOR UNITS EQUIPPED


WITH DETROIT DIESEL ELECTRONIC CONTROLS

When frame or other welding is required on units, the following precautions are to be
taken to protect the electronic control components:

1. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at the Detroit Diesel electronic control
unit.

2. Disconnect the positive and negative battery connections and any electronic
control ground wires connected to the frame, or unit.

3. Cover electronic control components and wiring to protect from hot sparks etc.

4. Do not connect welding cables to electronic control components.
