Kvaerner Energy LTD Thermal Power Division C.S.D. Field Technical Instruction

This document from Kvaerner Energy discusses an improved design for forward core plugs used in MS3002J gas turbines. The original core plugs were found to contribute to cracking in the leading edge of some first-stage nozzles due to radial thermal gradients. The new core plug design improves temperature distribution and reduces cracking sensitivity. It recommends replacing current core plugs with the new design at the next scheduled nozzle repair to prevent further issues.

THERMAL POWER DIVISION

C.S.D. FIELD TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION

Subject: Improved Design First-Stage FTI No: 0236

Nozzle Forward Core Plugs

Applicable: MS3002J Gas Turbines with uprate

first-stage nozzle 103E5554G001 or
103E5554G003

1. Purpose

Inform users that an improved design forward core plug is available. The
improved design core plugs improve temperature distribution at the leading edge
of the nozzle segments and reduce the sensitivity for cracking in this area.

2. Background/Discussion

Recent field experience shows that MS3002J uprate first-stage nozzles

manufactured prior to January 1, 1996 may experience leading edge to outer
sidewall fillet cracking. Investigation has revealed that a radial thermal gradient
condition contributes to the potential for the cracks. There has been no
consequential damage as a result of the cracking.

The radial thermal gradient condition can be corrected by installing new design
forward core plugs at the next normal service/repair interval. These new design
core plugs are used in current production and improve temperature distribution at
the leading edge of the nozzle segments and reduce the sensitivity for cracking
in this area.

3. Recommendations

At the next scheduled nozzle repair interval, Kvaerner Energy recommends

replacement of the current core plugs, 103E5552P001, with the improved design
core plugs 112E1605P001. The replacement should be by an authorised
Kvaerner Energy Service Centre.

Contact your local Kvaerner Energy, Thermal Power Division representative for
assistance or for additional information.
