Self-Reflection Paper

4/28/2020

Throughout this semester of student teaching in both fifth and second grade, I feel as

though I have grown immensely as a future educator. I have gained so many new experiences

through working in the field with students and experienced teachers as well. Prior to student

teaching, I was both anxious and excited, but I had no idea how much I would learn both in the

classroom, and outside of the classroom with distance learning.

I believe that my greatest strength when it comes to teaching is that I am always willing

and ready to learn more. Having the opportunity to work with such experienced and

knowledgeable educators, I was consistently learning through observation and practicing my

own skills in the classroom. In my first placement, my cooperating teacher and I were a team

and everything that I taught to the class, we would review after and discuss if there was

anything I could have done better or differently that would have been more beneficial to the

students as a whole. I felt comfortable enough to ask questions and try new techniques with

the class and I feel this made me more confident and trusting in myself as a future teacher. I

think as a teacher, it is crucial to always be learning new classroom management techniques,

learning strategies for different students with different needs, and how to provide a safe and

comfortable learning environment for students in the classroom. Something that I still need to

work on or explore further is my methods of formative assessment throughout my lessons. This

is something I struggled with throughout the entire semester, and had many conversations with

both my supervisor and cooperating teachers about. This is a very important concept when it

comes to planning a well-executed lesson. I do not have a hard time with summative

assessment, but I do struggle with incorporating ways to assess my students throughout the

lesson, while they are still learning.

Throughout this semester of student teaching, I have learned so much about what it

takes to be an efficient and effective teacher in the classroom. Something I learned through

hands-on experience that could have never been taught from a lecture or textbook is classroom

management. In my opinion, classroom management is something that you learn as you gain

experience in the classroom with students. Over my last three years at SUNY Oneonta I learned

about all different classroom management techniques and how to keep my classroom under

control in certain situations, however I did not really understand how often classroom

management has an effect on the environment and the ability of other students to learn until I

was standing in front of the class teaching a lesson. I also believe that classroom management

varies, depending on the grade level and group of students that you have. Not all techniques

will work, and it is crucial to find what works for your class specifically.

Distance learning has had a large impact on my student teaching experience, as we have

been experiencing a time in the world that is very scary and inconsistent. Throughout my

second placement, planning has been difficult. Although we had weekly Zoom grade level

conferences, our plans were always hanging and being adjusted based on students/parent’s

feedback. This is a very difficult time to be a teacher or a student, and parents struggled

immensely with implementing plans. Both my cooperating teacher and I were constantly
changing our lessons and plans because certain aspects of the lesson were too difficult for

parents and students to complete. For example, we cut our writing down to two days a week

instead of five, because it was too much work for the students and their parents to complete

every day. Throughout this experience over the last several weeks, my philosophy of teaching

has not completely changed, but was reinforced. I believe the most important part of being a

teacher is making sure that each student’s needs are being met and that each child has the

opportunity to perform at the best of their ability in the classroom. Throughout this time of

distance learning, I have seen first-hand how difficult differentiation can be in extenuating

circumstances. I also feel that it is crucial to keep in contact with students and parents, to make

sure that each student is where they need to be and there are no confusion/questions. Through

distance learning, I now see how important and necessary communication is between both

teacher and student and teacher and parent.

In conclusion, student teaching has taught me so much about teaching in general, and

myself as a future educator as well. Throughout these last five months I have grown as a

teacher and plan to use this experience as the foundation of my career. Both cooperating

teachers that I was fortunate enough to work with taught me so much about what it takes to be

a teacher in today’s generation of students and how to make a difference in the lives of my

students. I am very proud to say that I have completed student teaching and I feel this

experience is one I am forever thankful for. I am excited to see what the future holds, especially

after a historic time in the world like right now.
