Timeline:

 Windows 1.0 = November 20,1985


 Windows 2.0 = December 09,1987
 Windows 3.0 = May 22,1990
 Windows 95 = August 24,1995
- could auto detect and configure installed hardware
(Plug and Play)
 Windows 98 = June 1998
- released a second version in 1999 named Windows 98 second
edition
 Windows ME ( Millennium Edition) = June 19,2000
- added a new feature called system restore
 Windows XP ( Xperience Productivity ) = October 25,2001
 Windows Vista = January 30,2007
- Contains a large amount of new features from a redesigned shell
and user interface significant technical changes
 Windows 7 = October 22,2009

Windows Desktop

- a place where you can organize and interact with the computer, like the way
you organize your work on real desk.

 Desktop – workspace on the screen, if you want a quick way to


access an application, you can create shortcut to them to place on
your desktop.

Components:

 Icons – small graphics or pictures that represent tasks you can carry
out. Programs you can run, computer locations (disk drives
and folders ), files or a shortcut ( icon with bent arrow )

Examples:

My Computer – You can see all drives and the control panel where you can

configure many settings on your computer.


My Documents – default storage location for documents, graphics and other
files. It contains My Pictures, My Videos, and My Music
folders.

Recycle Bin – store files, graphics and web pages you have deleted.

Windows (Microsoft Word) – shortcut program (MS Word) that you can run
on your computer.

 Taskbar – contains the start button and Quick launch bar, it shoes which
programs are running by displaying their windows buttons.

Examples:

To create to compose and enter text or type a document

To format means to make the document presentable by


highlighting, aligning text, adjusting margins and
the like

To save means to store the document file by locating it and


storage medium such as floppy disks, compact disk
(CD), flash drive

To retrieve obtained the specific saved document file by


Locating it and returning it to a program or to the
user

To print to produce the document on paper called a print


out or hard copy

History:
The giant leap forward automation was made in 1867 when Christopher
Latham Sholes with the help of Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule. They invented
the first manual typewriter.
Events:

1872 = Thomas Alva Edison Patented on the electric typewriter.

1874 = E. Romington and Sons began the commercial marketing of the Sholes and
Glidden typewriter.

1878 = The Shift key was added to the typewriter

1897 = The Tab key was added to the typewriter

1920 = James Smathers invented the first workable electric typewriter

1961 = IBM introduced the selectric typewriter, this replaced the standard movable
samege with the revolving typeball referred as golfball

1964 = IBM introduced the Mt or St or Magnetic Tape Selectric typewriter. This


combine the features of the selection model with a magnetic tape card

1969 = IBM introduced tha Mag cards, the magnetic card attached to the typewriter
that records text

1971 = IBM engines led by Alan Shugart invented the memory disk

1972 = Lexitron and Linatex introduced a word processing subsystem which


includes video display screen and cassette tapes for storage

1973 = Vydec manufactured the first word processing system using floppy disk to
increase the text storage capacity

1976 = Altair programmer Micheal Shrayer wrote the Electric pencil which became
the first actual word processing program for PC

1979 = Word Star was developed by Sejmour Rubenstein and Rob Barnaby
Becarre the first commercially successful word processor for PC and best
selling program in the 80’s

1983 = Word Processor 10 was launched by Microsoft Corporation. It was the first
application program created by Microsoft.

1984 = Microsoft 6.0 for Windows became the first commercially successful word
Processor for PC in Window’s Environment
Word Processor

- Is an application program or software that lets the user enter and edit
text on the computer quickly and efficiently

Apple Works – Apple Computer Incorporated
Open Office Writer – Ubuntu

Title Bar
- displays the name of the document on which you are currently working

Menu bar
- displays the menu and use the menu to give instruction to the software

Standard toolbar
- provides shortcut to Menu commands

Formatting toolbar
- (Font, Font size, etc)

Drawing toolbar
- collects the majority of the tools normally used to create graphic objects

Status bar
- is an information area typically found at the bottom of windows in a
graphical user interface.

Scroll Bars
- Allow you to shift on screen display up or down left or right.

Text area
- is an area on a web page which can be typed into

Control Menu Button


- contains the control menu to manipulate the windows sizing, moving
and closing

- size and close applications or document windows

can be clipped or cut from the collection and incorporated into other documents.

Bit maps
- a data structure in memory that represents information in the collection of indi.
Bits (binary digits)

Drop Cap

- a large dropped initial capital letter in a paragraph. There are three drop cap
positions :

 None
 Dropped
 In Margin

To add a drop cap

Click on the paragraph that you want to begin with a drop cap. Click on the
format menu then choose either dropped or in margin, click OK.

Newspaper style columns

1. Select the text you want to display newspaper style columns


2. Click on the format menu, select columns ( the columns dialog box appears)
3. Under the preset category choose a setting that corresponds the no. of column
you want to display
4. Then click OK

To balance column length on the page

1. Position the cursor at the end of the last column


2. Click on the insert menu then select Break ( the break dialog box appears)
3. Under the section break types, select continuous
4. Then click OK
Drawing Toolbar
- collects the majority of the tools normally used to create graphic objects

Buttons:

Select object – change the painter to a selection arrow

Draw – a pull down menu with several drawing options

Auto shapes – pull down menu with several of shapes

Lines – draws a line

Rectangle – draws a rectangle

Oval – draws a oval

Textbox – draws a textbox

Word Art – creates text effects with word art

Diagram – draws a diagram

Clip art – insert clip art

Picture – insert picture

Fill color – add, modify, or remove fill color

Line color – add, modify, or remove line color

Font color – format the selected text with color

Line style – changes the thickness of the line

Dash style- select dash style for dash line

Arrow style – select arrow style, placement and shape of arrow head

Shadow style – insert shadow style

3D style – insert 3D style
