The parties involved in the treaty is the President of the United States, William R. Day,
Cushman K. Davis, William P. Frye, George Gray and Whitelaw Reid – citizen of the
United States; and Her Majesty the Queen Regent of Spain, Don Eugenio Montero Rios –
President of the Senate, Don Buenaventura de Abarzuza – Senator of the Kingdom and
ex-Minister of the crown, Don Jose de Garnica – Deputy to the Cortes and Associate
Justice of the Supreme Court, Don Wenceslao Ramirez de Villa-Urrutia – Envoy
Extraordinary and Don Rafael Cerero – General of Division.
2. What are the relevant information related to the treaty? What are the concerns stipulated
in the treaty? Explain
The treaty of Paris contains the agreement between the United States and Spain to end
war and finally have peace which was signed by some respective commissioners on the
10th day of December 1898. Moreover, Spain agreed to relinquished to the United States
the Philippine Archipelago in consideration of having $20,000,000 in return. The concern
of this agreement is that the United States should pay Spain $20 million for public
buildings and public works in the Philippines. Moreover, the treaty also urged Spain to
pay back the $400 million Cuban debt by transferring possession of Puerto Rico and the
Mariana island of Guam to the United States.
3. What are the major points that served to address by the treaty?
The major points of the treaty is composed of several negotiations between Spain and the
United States and these are; The relinquishment of all claim of sovereignty over and title
to Cuba, the concession to the United States of Puerto Rico and other islands under
Spanish sovereignty in the West Indies, the transferring of an island in the Ladrones
which is to be selected by the United States, the instant expulsion by Spain of Cuba,
Puerto Rico, and other Spanish islands in the West Indies. The occupation by the United
States of the city, bay, and harbor of Manila pending the conclusion of a treaty of peace
which should determine the control, disposition, and government of the Philippines.
4. Why is the treaty important? Why did the US decide to stay in the Philippines?
This treaty is important for the United States and Spain because it serves as the evidence
and agreement that the Spain will finally give up the Philippines and the United States
will take over. There main reason why the United States colonized the Philippines, and
these are because of some Economic reasons. For economic reasons, In an effort to
become a global imperial and economic powerhouse, the United States political leaders
colonized the Philippines due to strategic location of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean,
it was evidently shown that there was an era where imperialism was strictly a European
affair and the economy of some European countries have developed and prospered and
this was practically because of its nations imperial success which allowed for easy access
to foreign lands for trade. Furthermore, since that colonizing the Philippines was a great
achievement for the United States for the reason that it gave the United States access to
some high value natural resources, it is evidently true that the Philippines is blessed with
excellent natural harbors for ports like Manila Bay which can be a good transshipment
point for trade which is also the reason why the Spaniards colonized the archipelago and
additionally, since the Philippines consists of huge amounts of forested land which can be
very useful to produce products which is also good for trading. Minerals were also huge
in the Philippines and this can be use also to gain profit.
