Bitter melon envied the other vegetables in the town of Sariwa for their desirable characteristics. One night, bitter melon stole the characteristics of the other vegetables and passed itself off as beautiful. However, the vegetables discovered bitter melon's deceit and complained to the Fairy of Land. As punishment, the fairy transferred all the stolen characteristics onto bitter melon. This caused bitter melon's skin to darken and its taste to become unpleasantly bitter as the characteristics conflicted within its body. To this day, bitter melon remains disliked due to its bitter taste despite being nutritious.
