Inherent Safety Index Calculation Subindices

The document discusses calculating an Inherent Safety Index (ISI) to evaluate the intrinsic safety of chemical processes. The ISI is the sum of the Chemical Inherent Safety Index (ICI) and Process Inherent Safety Index (IPI). The ICI considers chemical factors like reactivity, flammability, and toxicity. The IPI accounts for process factors such as inventory, temperature, pressure, equipment safety, and process structure. A lower ISI value indicates an inherently safer process.

Inherent Safety

Evaluation
Evaluation of IS
• Through formation of inherent safety indices
• The intrinsic safety is however affected by both the
process equipment and the properties of the
chemical substances present in the process.
Therefore also the index should reflect this fact.
Principle of the formation of the index:

P.S.Patel 2
The ISI is calculated by following equation,
where the Total Inherent Safety Index (ISI) is
the sum of the:
- Chemical Inherent Safety Index (ICI) and
- Process Inherent Safety Index (IPI).

ISI = ICI + IPI

P.S.Patel 3
 The Chemical Inherent Safety Index ICI contains chemical
factors affecting the inherent safety of processes such as:
 chemical reactivity,
 flammability,
 explosiveness,
 toxicity
 corrosiveness

ICI = IRM,max + IRS,max + IINT,max + (IFL+IEX+ITOX)max+ ICOR,max

Flammability, explosiveness and toxicity are
where: determined separately for each substance in the
RM: Main Reaction process.
RS: Side Reaction
INT: Interaction Chemical reactivity consists of both the maximum
FL: Flammability values of indices for heats of main and side reaction
EX: Explosiveness and the maximum value of chemical interaction
TOX: Toxicity
which describes the unintended reactions between
chemical substances present in the process area
COR: Corrosiveness studied.

P.S.Patel 5
The Process Inherent Safety Index IPI expresses the inherent
safety of the process itself. It contains subindices of inventory,
process temperature and pressure, equipment safety and safe
process structure.
IPI = II + IT,max+ IP,max + IEQ,max + IST,max

where:
I: Inventroy
T: Temperature
P : Pressure
EQ: Equipment
ST: Process Structure

So, ISI value should now be on lower side
or higher side????

A low ISI index value obviously

represents an inherently safer process.
