3.Thermodynamics
Review Problem No.3
A bicycle has a volume of 600 cm3. It is inflated
with carbon dioxide to pressure of 80 psi at 20oC. How
many grams of carbon dioxide are contained in the
tire?
Solution to Review Problem No.3
M = molecular weight of CO2 = 12 + 2(16) = 44
R = 8.314/44 = 0.189 KJ/kg-K
V = 600 cm3/1003 = 0.0006 m3
P = 80 psi x 101.325/14.7 = 551.43 kpa
T = 20 + 273 = 293 K
PV = mRT
(551.43)(0.0006) = m(0.189)(293)
m = 0.00598 kg
m = 5.98 grams
