1. What is the rationale for taking this course on a contract basis?

Through taking Music Theory I on contract basis, I would continue to challenge myself by not only learning theory,
but by researching and understanding how modern music theory developed over the course of the centuries into
its current form. My goal of this honors contract is to delve deeper than a basic comprehension of music theory by
becoming more insightful on how those standards were initially created, accepted, and challenged by others.

2. Describe the Honors component of the course, discussing both the nature of the project and the way in which
this project constitutes “Honors.” Be as specific as possible in describing what it is you will do, including
references to specific readings and/or methodologies where appropriate. You may attach additional materials,
such as a bibliography, outline, etc. to lend additional detail.

Music Theory I establishes the foundation of the standards for western music, however, it does not address how
the standards originated and that they constantly being altered to allow music to expand into various new sounds.
In my essay and class presentation I will discuss the events that led up to the foundation of Stuttgart Pitch
(440Hz/A4), a reflection and analysis on the purpose and effects of various orchestras tuning to frequencies other
than 440Hz, why an octave is composed of 12 notes, and a video showcase and explanation of microtonal/ quarter
tone music.

3. How does the Honors component differ from normal course expectations? Will the Honors component
substitute for a regular course requirement?

While the standard Music Theory I class would involve writing music and remembering various rules of theory, the
addition of an honors component for this course would require me to learn how to explain the origins of theory
and composition methods and their evolution throughout recent history. It would demand me to understand why
the standards of music are the way they had been, currently are, and how they could possibly evolve in the future.
