Division, for the proposed construction of (G+2) Residential Building, located at Survey No: 186/2, Part of Sithalapakkam Village, Plot No: 2C, St, Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, Tambaram Taluk, Kancheepuram District, This work was authorized by the Client Mr, B.Subash Rao, S/o Mr.B. Nageswara Rao, vide their acceptance through mail dated on 15.08.2016. As two boreholes have been requested by the boreholes have been drilled, our recommendation was based on those two boreholes nt, it was area approximately about 2000 sqft. Since the two only, which was approved by the client. Standard Penetration Test two bore holes was drilled at the site in case of BH-1 & BH-2 drilled up to a depth of 4.80m & 4.70m below existing ground level respectively. The investigation consists of drilling two boreholes, soil sampling, field and laboratory testing and preparation of a Geotechnical Report for the Proposed Construction of (G+2) Residential Building, located at Survey No: 186/2, Part of Sithalapakkam Village, Plot No: 2C, St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, Tambaram Taluk, Kancheepuram District SCOPE OF WORK The scope of this investigation is to: ’) Determine the soil profile at the site, with ground water observation. ji) Recommend a suitable foundation system and safe bearing pressure at foundation level. ili) Advice on backfil Two (2) boreholes were drilled to a maximum depth of 4.80m. Soil samples were collected for visual identification, classification and laboratory testing. ‘The key plan & borehole location plan are presented in Appendix-A. The borehole logs and the cross sectional bore logs are presented in Appendix -B. The laboratory test results are presented in Appendix-C. The bearing capacity, settlement calculations are presented in ‘Appendix-D. GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF (G+2) RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT SITHALAPAKKAM, KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT The site for the proposed construction of (G+2) Residential Building, located at Survey No: 186/2, Part of Sithalapakkam Village, Plot No: 2C, St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, ‘Tambaram Taluk, Kancheepuram District The top surface of the site is same as the adjacent road level. The site is bounded by vacant land at North & South directions and residential building at West direction, while East direction where road was present. EXPLORATION PROGRAM & TECHNIQUES After the visual inspection of the site, the subsurface investigation was carried out as mentioned below: Two (2) exploration boreholes were drilled to a maximum depth of 4.80m. BH - 1 was started on 15" August 2016 and completed on 15" August 2016 BH - 2 was started on 16” August 2016 and completed on 16" August 2016 Boreholes were drilled as shown in the auto cadd drawing in order to obtain the soil property of the site. Rotary driling was performed using water as driling fluid in the sub soil with casing pipe to stabilize the boreholes up to the required depth. Field testing and sampling were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981 Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was performed on the sub soil. In_ this test, a standard split spoon (IS: 9640-1980) of length about 450 mm and external/internal diameter of 51/35 mm initially penetrates the soil for 15cm to bypass the expected accumulated sludge at the bottom of the hole by means of a 63.5 kg (140 Ib) hammer falling freely along a guide from a height of 760 mm, The total number of blows (N) required, to advance the spoon into the bore, for another two successive 15cm (a total of 30 cm) is recorded as a measure of the soil relative density or consistency. The fieldwork was carried out under the close supervision of our engineer in accordance with Indian Standard mentioned earlier. GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF (G+2) RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT SITHALAPAKKAM, KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM A\l the extracted soil smples were brought to the Geotechnical & Materials Testing Laboratory of JOSMAR Consulting Engineers for further examination in accordance with 1S: 1498-1970. Selected samples were subjected to the following physical tests. The laboratory test results are given in Appendix °C”. Moisture Content (IS: 2720 Part I! - 1973) 2. Sieve Analysis (IS: 2720 Part IV — 1985) 3. Liquid limit (Is: 2720 Part V — 1985) 4, Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index (|S: 2720 Part VI — 1972) 5. Differential Free Swell Test (|S: 2720 Part XL — 1977) SURFACE SOIL DESCRIPTION Based on boreholes information, sub surface soil profile at the proposed construction of (G+2) Residential Building is given below: 0.00 - 1.00m — Natural Soil 1.00 - 2.50m — Grayish, fine sandy silty poorly graded sand silt mixtures (SM) 2.50 — 480m — Grayish, well graded gravels, gravel sand - mixtures with little fines (GW) 0.00 - 1.00m — Natural Soil 1.00 - 3.50m — Grayish, fine sandy sifty poorly graded sand silt mixtures (SM) 3.50 - 4.70m — Greyish, well graded gravels, gravel sand - mixtures with little fines (GW) GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF (G+2) RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT SITHALAPAKKAM, KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT Borehole data indicates, In case of BH-1, the top surface soil consists of natural soil found up to a depth of 1.00m. This layer is followed by Grayish, fine sandy silty poorly graded sand silt mixtures (SM) found up to a depth of 2.50m where its standard penetration test result indicates very dense relative density. This layer is followed by Grayish, well graded gravels, gravel sand - mixtures with litte fines (GW) found up to a depth of 4.80m where its standard penetration test result indicates very dense relative density. Further driling was not feasible by rotatory drilling due to refusal strata In case of BH-2, the top surface soil consists of natural soil found up to a depth of 1.0m. This layer is followed by Grayish, fine sandy silty poorly graded sand silt mixtures (SM) found up to a depth of 3.50m where its standard penetration test result indicates very dense relative density. This layer is followed by Greyish, well graded gravels, gravel sand - mixtures with iitie fines(GW) found up to a depth of 4.70m where its standard penetration test result indicates very dense relative density. Further drilling was not feasible by rotatory drilling due to refusal strata. GROUND WATER Ground water table is observed at 2.00m below ground level during the time of field investigation. However, it may fluctuate due to seasonal variations and local sewerage disposal practices. FOUNDATION ANALYSIS Analysis of Spread Shallow foundation system is feasible for the proposed (G+2) Residential Building as the expected settlement for Spread / Isolated foundation is well within the allowable limits, The analysis of spread footing is presented in Appendix-D The settlement calculation and allowable bearing pressure is carried out for spread footing Initially, bearing capacity calculations were carried out using average soil properties of the founding strata, as Cohesive strength = zero kPa and the angle of internal friction is 32 degree for spread. A safe bearing pressure of 200 kPa has been found to be useful in settlement calculations for spread. GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF (G+2) RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT SITHALAPAKKAM, KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT The ground water table was observed at 2.00m below ground level during the time of investigation however necessary corrections were carried out for N values. Corrected N value table is presented in appendix ~ D. Safety factor for bearing capacity calculation was considered as 2.5 as per IS: 1904. Settlement calculations were carried out by estimating the modulus of elasticity of soil, using appropriate corrected N values for subsoil layer up to @ depth of 7.5m below ground level for spread. A tolerable settlement of 50mm, has been used as the controlling criteria for the allowable settlement being a concrete structure on spread footings as per IS : 1904-1986. A bearing pressure of 200kPa for spread has been found to be safe from controlling the total settlement criteria. As the expected settlement is well within the allowable limits, spread Isolated footing can be adopted. FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATION: Based on the borehole information and laboratory test results in addition to the nature of Structure, the recommendations for the proposed structure are given below: - Spread /Isolated foundation shall be adopted for the proposed structure. - The foundation shall be placed at a depth of 2.0m below ground level - An Allowable bearing pressure of 200kPa shall be taken for design purpose, ~ Expected settlements shall be less than the permissible limits for the foundation and the differential settlement shall be considered up to 75% of the expected total settlement. FOUNDATION CONSIDERATIONS APCC (Plain Cement Concrete) layer of 10cm thickness is recommended below the foundation. Any over excavation in the foundation trenches should be re-filled by plain concrete and any disturbed and loose materials found in the foundation trenches should be removed before placement of P.C.C. GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF (G+2) RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT SITHALAPAKKAM, KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT BACKFILLING AND COMPACT! Excavated material cannot be used as general backfill material. As per general practice the backfill material should not contain more than 15 % fines passing 0.075 mm sieve, retain 40% on 4.75mm size sieve while the maximum size of gravel allowed is 50mm. Backfiling materials shall be placed in horizontal layers not exceeding 25 cm thickness and each layer shall be compacted to at least 95% of the maximum dry density. EXCAVATION Excavation through the overburden soil can be carried out by conventional equipment such as dozers and poclain excavators. GENERAL COMMENTS The recommendations for foundation design and construction are based on the information obtained from the borehole drilled at site. When foundation construction is underway, the recommendations of this report should be checked through field inspection, to validate the information for use during the construction stage. Any variation in underground conditions revealed by the borehole should be brought to our attention for alterate recommendations, if needed, Yours Truly, FOR JOSMAR CONSULTING ENGINEERS Ree epe es Er.P.KALPANA.
