4A'sLP (Week 3)

1. The learning plan summarizes Ms. Diana Rose M. Orlina's mathematics class from June 27-30 that will cover special products, factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, and algebraic expressions with integral exponents. 2. Over the course of 4 days, students will review special products, take a summative test, learn to factor polynomials by greatest common factor, and factor the sum and difference of two terms and perfect square trinomials. 3. Activities include games and exercises to help students develop skills in factoring polynomials and special products, with analysis of student work and reflections on how to improve learning.

Learning Plan in Grade 8 Mathematics

June 27 – June 30, 2016

(Regular)

Teacher: Ms. Diana Rose M. Orlina

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of the key concepts of special
products, factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions and algebraic expressions
with integral exponents.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving special
products and factors and solves rational algebraic expressions and algebraic expressions
with integral exponents and solves these with utmost accuracy using a variety of strategies.
Topics: Summative Test, Factoring Polynomials by Greatest Common Factor, Factoring
Difference of Two Squares, Factoring Perfect Square Trinomial, Factoring Quadratic
Trinomial
Time Frame: 3 Hours
Materials: Whiteboard marker, paper and pencil, laptop, Tv.

Lesson Proper

Day 1 (Meeting1)

Objectives

1. Recall the steps to obtain the product of polynomials and perform the operations with
skills and accuracy.
2. Determine the special product of sum and difference of two terms.

Activity

The students will review on how to get the product of the sum and difference of two
terms and to cube a binomial.

Analysis

1. How do we get the product of the sum and difference of two terms and the cube of a
binomial?

Abstraction

The product of the sum and the difference of the same two terms is equal to the
difference of the terms.
A cubed binomial (sum, difference) is equal to the cube of the first, (plus, minus) three
times the square of the first by the second, (plus, minus) three times the first by the square of
the second, (plus, minus) the cube of the second.

Application

The students will answer Exercise 1.1.3 A(1 – 5 ) and Exercise 1.1.4.A ( 1 – 5 ) on page 8 and
10 of the worktext.
Day 2 (Meeting 2)

Objectives

1. Assess the student’s knowledge and learnings on special products through a 30-item
teacher prepared summative test.
2.

Activity

Students will answer a 30-item test.

Analysis

1. Which items did students find to be easy?

2. Which did they find to be difficult?

Abstraction

Students will undergo summative assessment to evaluate their learning of special

products.

Application

Let the students reflect and write ways on how to improve their learning.

Day 3 (Meeting 3)

Objectives

1. Factor polynomials  by finding the greatest common factor (GCF)

Activity

(Finding Common)
Students will identify common things that are present in three pictures.
Analysis

1. What are the common things that are present in the three pictures?
2. What are the things common to two pictures but not on the other?

Abstraction

For a polynomial, the GCF is the largest polynomial that will divide evenly into that
polynomial.

Application

The students will answer Exercise 1.2.1 A (1 – 5 ) p. 12.

Day 4 (Meeting 4)

Objectives

1. Factor the sum and difference of two terms

2. Identify and factor a perfect square trinomial

Activity

(Pair Mo Ako Niyan!)

Students will play a game that will help them develop their factoring skills by formulating
problem based on some given expressions.

(Perfect Hunt)
Students will look for the different perfect square trinomials found in the box (to be provided by
the teacher). Answers might be in diagonal, horizontal or vertical in form.

Analysis

1. What are the resulting products?

2. How are the terms of the products related to the terms of the factors?

Abstraction

The factored form of a polynomial that is a difference of two

squares is the sum and difference of the square roots of the first and last terms.
To factor perfect square trinomials:
a. Get the square root of the first and last terms.
b. List down the square root as sum/difference of two terms as the case may be.

Application

The students will answer Exercise 1.3 A ( 1 – 5 ) and Exercise 1.4

B (1 – 5 ) p. 16
