WEEK 8.2. Lesson Plan Solution Linear Inequalities
WEEK 8.2. Lesson Plan Solution Linear Inequalities
I. OBJECTIVES: at the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. define inequalities;
b. determine the element/s of the replacement set that satisfy the inequality;
c. differentiate between equations and inequalities;and
d. find the solution of linear inequalities in one variable from a given replacement set by guess
and check.
II. SUBJECT MATTER: Solution of Linear inequalities from a given replacement set by Guess and
Check

B. Developmental activities
1. Motivation
I have here the different symbols (flashcards). Can
you tell me the meaning of the following?
1. + (Addition)
2. ÷ (Division)
3. x (Multiplication)
4. – (Subtraction)
5. ˂ (Less than)
6. ˃ (Greater than)
7. ≥ (Greater than or equal to)
8. ≤ (Less than or equal to)
Example:
1. 3 + 2 = 5
Is it true or false? False.
Therefore 3 + 2 ≠ 5 it is an inequality.
Did you still remember the meaning of this sign (≠)? That is Unequal sign.
Very good!
This is an unequal sign, meaning their relationship can
be any of the following: greater than (˃), greater than
or equal to (≥), less than (˂), less than or equal to (≤).
Example:
1. x – 4 ˂ 3
How can we determine that the statement is true or By using guess and check.
false?
This statement is either true or false. What do you
think is the value of our x to make the statement
true?
If x = 6, then x – 4 ˂ 3
6-4˂3
2 ˂ 3 true because 2 is less than 3.
How about if we substitute x = 10? Who wants to If x = 10, then x – 4 ˂ 3
answer? 10 - 4 ˂ 3
6 ˂ 3 false because 6 are
greater than 3.
Good!
Do you think that there can be more than one Yes, ma’am.
solution to a linear inequalities in one variable?
Let’s try more solutions.
If x = 5, then x – 4 ˂ 3
5-4˂3
1 ˂ 3 true
If x = 6, then x – 4 ˂ 3
6-4˂3
2 ˂ 3 true
If x = 6.5, then x – 4 ˂ 3
6.5 - 4 ˂ 3
2.5 ˂ 3 true
If x = 7, then x – 4 ˂ 3
7-4˂3
3 ˂ 3 false 3 is less than or equal to (≤ ¿
3.
If x = 8, then x – 4 ˂ 3
8-4˂3
4 ˂ 3 false 4 is greater than ˃ 3.
5. Generalization
What are the difference between linear equations
and Linear inequalities? Linear inequality may have more than
one solution because there are
infinitely many numbers that are
greater than (or less than) a given
number. This is not the same for
equations. The linear equations in one
variable may have a unique solution.
Very nice answer!
IV. EVALUATION
Answer :
x–3<5
For x = –8: For x = –3: For x = 5: For x = 8: For x = 11:
–8 – 3 = –11 –3 – 3 = –6 5–3=2 8–3=5 11 – 3 = 8
–11 < 5 –6 < 5 2<5 5<5 8 < 13
Therefore – Therefore –3 is Therefore 5 is Therefore 8 is Therefore 11 is
8 is a a solution. a solution. a solution. not a solution.
solution.
V. ASSIGNMENT:
½ crosswise. Complete the following table by placing a check mark on the cells that correspond
to x values that make the given equation true and answer the question below.
