Earth Works (Foundation) : Technological University of The Philippines Ayala Boulevard, Ermita, Manila

The document summarizes a student group's construction of a foundation for a class project. It outlines the materials, tools, and equipment used which included cement, sand, gravel, protective gloves, and power tools. It describes the procedures taken which involved mixing materials and placing them in the form to create the foundation. Finally, it discusses the values learned like cooperation, strategy, and communication and provides a cost audit of the materials used totaling 475 pesos.

INTRODUCTION

Foundation is the element of a structure which connects it to the ground, and transfers
loads from the structure to the ground. Foundations are generally considered either shallow or
deep. Foundation engineering is the application of soil mechanics and rock mechanics in the
design of foundation elements of structures. Foundations provide the structure’s stability from
the ground.

The purpose of the foundation is to; (1) To distribute the weight of the structure over
large area so as to avoid over-loading of the soil beneath (2) To anchor the structures against the
changing natural forces like Earthquakes, floods, frost-heave, tornado or wind (3) To provide a
level surface for building operations (4) To take the structure deep into the ground and thus
increase its stability, preventing overloading and (5) Specially designed foundations helps in
avoiding the lateral movements of the supporting material.

The design and the construction of a well-performing foundation must not be ignored.
They are the; (1) The design and the construction of the foundation is done such that it can
sustain as well as transmit the dead and the imposed loads to the soil. This transfer has to be
carried out without resulting in any form of settlement that can result in any form of stability
issues for the structure (2) Differential settlements can be avoided by having a rigid base for the
foundation. These issues are more pronounced in areas where the superimposed loads are not
informed in nature (3) Based on the soil and area it is recommended to have a deeper foundation
so that it can guard any form of damage or distress. There are mainly caused due to the problem
of shrinkage and swelling because of temperature changes and lastly the location of the
foundation chosen must be an area that is not affected or influenced by future works or factors.

The foundation material should be at least as durable as the rest of the structure.
Foundations are subject to attack by moisture, rodents, termites, and to a limited extent, wind.
The moisture may come from rain, surface water or groundwater and although a footing drain
can reduce the problem, it is important to use a foundation material that will not be damaged by
water or the lateral force created by saturated soil on the outside of the wall. In some cases, the
foundation must be watertight in order to prevent water from penetrating into a basement or up
through the foundation and into the building walls above. Any foundation should be continued
for at least 150mm above ground level to give adequate protection to the base of the wall from
moisture, surface water and etc.
MATERIALS, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT

The following is the list of materials, tools, and equipment used during the construction of the
foundation project:

1. Cement- it is used for construction that sets, hardens and adheres to other materials to
bind them together.

2. Sand (Fine Aggregates)- It is used to provide the strength and stability to other materials
such as cement and etc.

3. Gravel (Coarse Aggregates)- It is used to provide a rigid skeletal structure ad to reduce

the space occupied by the cement paste.

4. Tape measure – a tool used to measure.

5. Leather glove – an equipment used to protect hands.

6. Screw – Is used to attach the Angular Bar onto the

wood.

7. Reinforced Bar- We used this for the base as support.

8 Rotary Hammer Drill- We used this for demolishing the foundation.

PROCEDURES:

1. Buying of materials.

2.

We

are assigned to use the ready-made foundation of the first group to lessen the cost and time
consume.
3. We also used the first group ready-made form.

4. The mixing of the materials.

5. We put the mixed material into the foundation.
6. After putting all the mixed material we plastered it.

7. We cleaned and ensured that tools were returned before leaving the work area.

8. Removing of the form

9. We start to demolished the foundation.
10. The final product of our demolition

VALUES LEARNED

The following is the list of the values learned by the project team throughout the conduct of the
project:

1. Cooperation – This value measures the group’s ability to work together in order to
finish a good product without creating personal issues.
2. Good strategy – This value measures the group’s ability to think critically on how to
achieve things fast and effective.
3. Perseverance – This value measures the group’s willingness and is able to sacrifice
for the completion of the project.
4. Good Communication – This value measures the group’s ability to inform and take
information effectively without creating personal issues.
