Electric Machine Design

This document contains 4 questions related to electrical engineering design. Question 1 has 15 short answer sub-questions about electrical machine properties and design considerations. Question 2 provides specific parameters for a DC generator and asks to calculate loadings. Question 3 has two parts asking to calculate temperature rise and time constants for a transformer, and to design dimensions for a shunt generator given loadings and efficiency. Question 4 has two parts, one calculating effective air gap length and the other apparent flux density given tooth geometry and flux density data.

13. What is the height occupied by series field coil in a field pole?
14. How the Ampere turns of the series field coil is estimated?
15. Mention the factors to be considered for the design of shunt field coils

Question 2: [15 Marks]

A 400KW, 500V, 450rpm, 6 pole DC generator is built with an armature diameter of 0.87m and core
length is 0.32m. the lap wound has 600 conductors. Calculate the specific electric loading and magnetic
loading.
Question 3: [20 Marks]

a) The temperature rise of a transformer is 250C after an hour and 37.50C after 2 hrs of starting
from cold condition. Calculate its final steady temp rise and heating time constant. If its temp
falls from steady value to 400C in 2.5 hrs when disconnected, calculate its cooling time constant.
The ambient temperature is 300C

b) A 5 KW,4Pole,250V,1500 rpm shunt generator is designed to have square pole face. The
loadings are Average flux density in the gap=0.42 Wb/m2 and ampere conductor per
meter=15000. Find the main dimensions of the machine. Assume fill load efficiency 0.87 and
ratio of pole arc to pole pitch=0.66

Question 4: [20 Marks]

a) The Stator of a machine has a smooth surface but its rotor has open type of slot width
Ws=tooth width Wt=14mm and length of air gap Ig=3mm. find the effective length of air if the
carter’s coefficient=1/(1+5(Ig/Wg)).
b) Calculate the apparent flux density at a particular section of a tooth from the following data
tooth width=10mm; gross core length=0.32n; number of ventilating ducts=6 each 10mm; real
