Instructions to students:
Answer FIVE FULL Questions.
1 a Discuss the desirable properties of the conducting and insulating materials used 8 1 L2
for the manufacture of electrical machines.
b Calculate the main dimensions for a 250 kVA, 6600/415V, 50Hz three phase core 12 3 L3
type Transformer. Assume the following data. Emf/turn = 10V, Maximum value
of flux density = 1.1Tesla, Current density = 2.5A /mm 2, window space factor =
0.33. Over all height = Over all width, stacking factor = 0.9d. Use stepped core,
the width of largest stamping is 0.9, Net iron area = 0.6d 2, where d is diameter of
the circumscribing circle.

2 a Classify the insulating materials based on the thermal considerations. Give 8 1 L4
examples for each classification.
b Determine the main dimensions of the three limb core, the number of turns and 12 3 L5
cross sectional area of conductors of a 350kVA, 11000/3300V star/delta, three
phase 50Hz transformer. Assume volt/turn = 11, maximum flux density = 1.25T.
Net cross sectional area of core = 0.6d 2, window space factor = 0.27, window
proportion = 3:1,current density = 250A/cm2, oil immersed self cooled
transformer having ± 2.5% and ± 5% tapping on high voltage winding.
3 a Derive the expression for Leakage reactance of a transformer of cylindrical coils 10 2 L4
. of equal height. Clearly state the assumptions made.
b The tank of a 1250 kVA natural oil cooled transformer has the dimensions – 10 4 L1
length, width & height as 1.55m, 0.65m and 1.85m respectively. The full load
loss is 13.1 kW. Find the number of tubes for this transformer assuming loss
dissipated due to radiation is 6 W/m2, due to convection is 6.5 W/m 2;
improvement in convection due to provision of tubes is 40%. Temperature rise =
40oC; length of each tube is 1m; diameter of tubes =50mm. Neglect top and
bottom surfaces of tank as regards cooling.
