Mom Lab

This document is a lab report on testing the deflection of two beams made of different materials. The experiment measured the deflection of steel and copper beams as increasing loads were applied. The steel beam deflected less than the copper beam under the same loads. Calculations were shown to determine the theoretical deflection based on the beams' dimensions and materials' modulus of elasticity. The steel beam had less average percentage error and greater stiffness than the copper beam, indicating it resisted deformation better under the applied forces. Sources of error included human measurement errors and imperfect test setup.

1.Introduction
In the load transfer process, the load must pass through
beams, so it must be strong enough to resist load, but beside
strength, the beam must be stiff enough, so in this
experiment we are going to test the stiffness of two beams
made of various materials, and calculate the magnitude of
.the deflection

2.Objective
The objective from this experiment is to calculate the
deflection of the beams and the stiffness of the beams
.materials

Definition.3
Deflection: the vertical displacement of a point on a
.loaded beam

Stiffness: the ability of an object not to deform under the

.applied forces
4.Apparatus
Two metal beams that has the same shape and area and a
.deflection machine test

Procedure.5
put the beam on the machine and the support on .1
.the right position
put the hanger on the right position on the beam .2
.and tare the dial gauge reading to zero
start adding the loads and read the amount of .3
.deflection on the dial gauge
.repeat the last step and make the calculation .4
6. Results& Calculations
Beam 1

Material _________Steel___________ length _______650 mm_________

Width ________19 mm____________ depth ________3.5 mm___________

Modulus of elasticity __________200 GPa____________

Load (N) Dial reading Deflection (mm) Theo. Deflection (mm) % Error
1 4 0.4 0.421 4.98
2 10 1 0.843 18.62
3 16 1.6 1.264 26.58
4 22 2.2 1.686 30.48
Avg error 20.165%

Deflection theo= a * w l^3\E I

= (1\48) * 1*(650^3) \ (200*10^3) * (19* 3.5^3 \12)
= 0.421
AND SO ON USING THIS FORMULA ,WE HAVE :
2N=0.843
3N=1.264
4N=1.686

stiffness S= Load\Deflection= 3-2\1.6-1=1.66 N\mm

= (1\48) * 1*(700^3) \ (120*10^3) * (19* 4.6^3 \12)

Disscussion.7
We saw that the deflection depends on many factors
such as , the amount of strength , length of the
. beam , materials type and beam thickness
We show that the steel bar has more stiffness and
less deflection than the copper beam

8.source of errors
the errors came from human measurements and tools
errors(error in putting the load in the exact position and the
beam wasn’t horizontal properly).
