NOTES:
1) Upon prolonged exposure to temperatures above about 800ºF (425ºC), the carbide phase of carbon steel may be converted to graphite.
2) Upon prolonged exposure to temperatures above about 875ºF (470ºC), the carbide phase of carbon-molybdenum steel may be converted to graphite.
3) Only killed steel shall be used above 850ºF (455ºC).
4) Use normalized and tempered material only.
5) Leaded grades shall not be used where welded or in any application above 500ºF (260ºC).
6) At temperatures over 1000ºF (540ºC), use only when the carbon is 0.04% or higher.
7) For temperatures above 1000ºF (540ºC), use only if the material is heat treated by heating it to a minimum temperature of 1900ºF (1040ºC) and quenching
in water or rapidly cooling by other means.
8) For service temperatures above 850ºF (455ºC), it is recommended that killed steels containing not less than 0.10% residual silicon be used.
9) For service temperatures of 1050ºF (565ºC) and above, assurance must be provided that grain size is not finer than ASTM NO. 6.
10) Use annealed material only.
11) Use solution annealed material only.
12) The chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treating requirements, and grain size requirements shall conform to the applicable ASTM
specification. The manufacturing procedures, tolerances, tests, certifications, and markings shall be in accordance with ASTM specification B564.
13) Alloy NO6625 in the annealed condition is subject to severe loss of impact strength at room temperature after exposure in the range of 1000ºF (1832ºC) to
1400ºF (2552ºC).
14) Suitable only when supplementary requirement S12 of A743 has been met.
15) Suitable only when supplementary requirement S12 of A744 has been met.
16) When used for investment castings, mechanical properties may be determined using a 1 in. x 0.25 in. diameter tensile specimen in place of the standard 2
in. specimen

Notes:
1) Where austenitic bolting materials have been carbide solution treated but not strain hardened, they are designated, Class 1 or Class 1A in ASTM A194
nuts of corresponding material are recommended.
2) Where austenitic bolting materials have been carbide solution treated and strain hardened, they are designated Class 2 in ASTM A193, ASTM A194 nuts
of corresponding material are recommended.
3) For limitations of usage and strength levels, see ANSI B16.34-1988 sections 5.1.1.
4) For ferritic bolting materials intended for service at low temperatures, ASTM A194 Gr. 4 or Gr. 7 nuts are recommended.
5) Acceptable nuts for use with these quenched and tempered steel bolts are ASTM A194 Gr. 2 and 2H.
6) These are bolting materials suitable for high temperature service with austenitic stainless steel valve materials.
7) Nuts may be of the same material or may be of compatible grade of ASTM A194.
8) Bolts with drilled or undersize heads shall not be used.
9) Mechanical property requirements for studs shall be the same as those for bolts.
10) Only Grades 651 and 660 shall be used.
11) Forging quality not permitted unless the producer last heating or working these parts tests them as required for other permitted conditions in the same
specification and certifies their final tensile, yield, and elongation properties to equal or exceed the requirements for one of the other permitted conditions.
12) Repair welding of bolting material is not permitted.
13) Maximum operating temperature is arbitrarily set at 500ºF (260ªC) unless material has been annealed, solution annealed, or hot finished, because hard
temper adversely affects design stress in the creep-rupture temperature range.
