a Grouting mortars shall be Laticrete Dry-set Grout or equal and approved.
4.0 WORKMANSHIP
4.1.1 The Contractor shall check the pool base for suitability for the bedding or setting of tiles/cladding. The
Contractor shall immediately notify the Engineer in writing if he has any doubts as to the site methods
proposed or as to the services of other Contractors. According to this proviso the following, for example,
may be taken as valid reasons for doubt:
A. substantial unevenness
B. efflorescence
C. settlement cracks
D. surfaces which are too smooth
E. surfaces of inadequate strength
F. frozen surfaces
G. oily surfaces (eg by formwork oil)
H. presence of gypsum
I. exposed reinforcement, protruding nails or other metal components
J. remains of wooden formwork
K. lack of or inadequate falls or ones which do not conform to the site drawings
4.2.1 The surfaces to be tiled shall first be cleaned of dust and contaminants, mortar droppings and formwork
remains etc. A full, flush scratch coat shall then be applied. This shall be of such a nature that holes and

4.3.1 Tiling shall be correctly marked out before laying to Engineers approval. To obtain a uniform joint the
cladding shall first be laid with the outlet and inlet fittings temporarily positioned and fixed points
established for the overall cladding.
4.3.2 Setting of glass mosaic tiles tiling shall begin at the bottom of the pool wall. Not more than three rows of
tiles shall be laid at a time so that the mortar partly sets and to prevent the tiles and mortar spillage.
4.3.3 Mix ratio for the bedding and laying mortar for glass mosaic tiles shall be strictly in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations and shall include a resin adhesive recommended for admixture to
water features tile laying mortar.
The bedding mortar shall be mixed thoroughly by machine. The Contractor shall not make up more
mortar than can be used before it starts to set.
4.3.4 The mortar bed shall be in strict accordance with the tile manufacturer’s recommendations.
Extruded ceramic tiles and special shaped fittings shall be laid on the tiling base in a full mortar bed. The
back of shaped fittings shall be fully covered with mortar.
4.3.5 Substantial unevenness and dimensional variations in the tiling base shall not be evened out by means
of the bedding or setting mortar. In such cases, the construction of the pool lining shall be examined in
consultation with the Engineer and if necessary additional measures taken.
4.3.6 The setting of the glass mosaic tiles on the pool walls shall be absolutely true, both vertically and
horizontally. Joint width shall be to manufacturers standards.
4.3.7 The Contractor shall ensure that the setting mortar shall be uniformly applied to the backs of the tiles.
After tile setting, the mortar bed shall be compacted by tapping the tiles with the handle of the trowel.
The compaction causes the mortar to slump. The gap this left without mortar shall be back-filled with
mortar before setting next row of tiles and the mortar smoothed upwards in a diagonal direction.
4.4 Pointing
4.4.1 The joints shall be raked out before the bedding mortar sets.
4.4.2 The pointing grout shall be to Engineers approval and shall be colour-matched to the overall tile colour.
4.5 Cleaning
4.5.1 After laying and pointing the tile cladding shall be cleaned by rinsing down with water using a proprietary
cleaning tool. If soiling by cement film or laitents cannot be removed in this way, it shall be removed by
treatment with suitable proprietary cleaning agents or dilute acetic acid (mix ratio 1:10). Thorough
saturation of the joints with clean water shall be undertaken before such treatment. This prevents the
acid penetrating the joints causing damage. The dilute acetic acid shall be allowed to take effect for 5 to
109 minutes, followed by thorough rinsing with clear water using a hose spray.

Before using cleaning agents to clean the pool, a test cleaning shall be made on a small area at some
appropriate place to test exactly not only the detergent efficiency but also whether the product is liable to
attach the tiling. Only those cleaning agents shall be used which appear in the 'List of tested cleaning
agents for ceramic claddings in swimming pools' list issued by the German Society for Swimming Pools.
4.5.2 To prevent the ingress of cleaning agents and building debris into the filtration system the pools are to be
thoroughly cleaned and washed down with waste water pumped to drain, prior to the end test caps being
removed from the filtration pipework.
