J. Testing And Disinfection

Drainage System Test

Ball Test
- The contractor must ensure proper grade in the drainage pipes. A
representative/inspector will use a ball to check for adequacy by inserting it into a
fitting. If the grade is correct, the ball will travel to the clean-out.
Water Test
- During installation of rough-in drainage and vents, a water test can be conducted by
filling the system with water to a minimum depth of 3 meters. All rough openings
must be tightly sealed below the clean-out. The system should be filled to the level of
the highest point, such as the vent terminal, and maintain this water level for at least
15 minutes.

Air Pressure Test

- The system must be completely filled with air to a pressure of 35 kPa (5 psi) and
maintain this pressure for 15 minutes without any drop.

Smoke Test
- A smoke generator is used to fill the system until smoke begins coming out of the vent
terminal. Once smoke is visible, the system should be plugged or capped. Maintain
the system filled with smoke at a pressure of 1 inch of water column (less than 0.04
psi) for 15 minutes without adding more smoke.

Pressure Test of Waterline

Pressure Test Requirement

- Before potable water piping can be put into service, a pressure test must be
conducted as required by code, which may be witnessed by a local inspector.

Test Medium
- Only potable water can be used to test potable water distribution pipes.

Air Removal
- Ensure air is removed from the system through valves and fittings before testing.

Inspection
- The normal operating supply pressure is sufficient for testing. Visually inspect every
fitting and connection for leaks, and recheck for small leaks after an hour, especially
on threaded connections.

Pressure Gauge Insertion for Blocked Sections

- If a section of the system is blocked from view, insert a pressure gauge along that part
of the system, pressurize it, and isolate the system. Record the pressure reading for 8
hours at 2000 psi.

Defective Work

- The contractor is accountable for rectifying any repeated work if the system fails to
receive approval from the inspector.
- The contractor, in conjunction with the inspector, may repeat the testing of the system
until it meets the required standards for leak testing satisfactorily.

Distinction of Water Distribution System and Water Tanks (as per AWWA C-601):

Disinfection and Bacteriological Testing

- Prior to connection to existing mains, disinfection and bacteriological testing must be
performed according to specifications. Authorization for connection to the existing
system will be granted only upon satisfactory hydrostatic disinfection and
bacteriological test results.

Approval Process
- Disinfection of pipelines should not commence until all necessary appurtenances and
sample points are installed and approved by the inspector through written
confirmation of the disinfection process results.
- Efforts should be made to maintain the water main and its appurtenances clean and
dry during the installation process.
- Any valves, fittings, or appurtenances that become contaminated during installation
must be thoroughly rinsed with potable water and treated with a 5% sodium
hypochlorite disinfecting solution before installation.

Timing of Disinfection

- Disinfection of the pipelines should not occur simultaneously with hydrostatic testing.
Disinfection is to be conducted only after the lines have been flushed and have
successfully passed the hydrostatic test.

K. Responsibility

Construction Activities
- The contractor is responsible for planning and executing all activities pertinent to the
construction of a dwelling, building, or other structure.
