Logical Fallacies

1. Dicto Simpliciter – This is the fallacy of making a sweeping statement and expecting it to
be true of every specific case in other words, stereotyping.

- The majority of believers in god are religious, therefore, the concept of god is a
completely religious idea and we all know how harmful religion can be
- All people with a college degree are better communicators than those who do not have
a college degree.

2. Hasty Generalization – a fallacy in which one reaches a generalization based on


insufficient evidence, making a rushed conclusion without considering all of the
variables.

- A person is walking through a town and he meets a few polite kids, seeing that he
concludes that all the kids in that town are polite

-My friend has been eating only hamburgers, pizza for 5years, and he has no health issue.
Therefore, fast food is not unhealthy for you.

3. Post Hoc – happens when you are confusing a coincidental event with cause.

- Our basketball team was losing until I create new team.


- Researchers discovered that the incidences of brain cancer have also increased in that
time

4. Contradictory Premises – The premises of the argument contradict each other so there
can’t be an argument.

- I don’t believe something written in a book, but I believe in science.

- I don’t care what you believe, as long as your beliefs don’t harm others.

5. Ad Misericordiam – also known as Appeal to pity, seek to fool the hearer to transfer their
feelings of sympathy and empathy for a person onto that person’s argument or
conclusion.
-  I am filing for reconsideration of the offenses complained about. Since I am a well-
known athlete, I can make your University great again.

-Your friend begged you to get what they need.

6. False Analogy – make an assumption about two things that are alike.

- Tigers and lions are ruthless killers. House cats must also be ruthless killers.

- People and watchers are both complex. Therefore, they both must be the product of
complex design.

7. Hypothesis contrary to fact – confusing what might have been with what should have
been.

- John you should know your limitations but you need to break it for some stuff.

- You don’t know how to fix the CPU but you will try because you watch some video in
YouTube.

8. Poisoning the Well – attacking the person instead of attacking the argument

- My statement is very true to him but he decided to attack my personal identity to gain
more attention to the audience.

- Your friend tells you that her brother wants to date your sister, but she says that he is a
player and never keeps a girlfriend for very long. Now, when you agree to meet for your
sister, your opinion will be tainted.
