CDB 3044 - Process Plant Design: Tutorial - 3

This document contains two problems related to separating mixtures using process equipment. The first problem involves estimating the dimensions of a horizontal decanter drum to separate an oil-water mixture where the water droplets are less than 150 μm. The second problem involves estimating the dimensions of a gravity settler to separate particles greater than 175 μm from a gas stream. Both problems require using information about flowrates, densities, viscosities to calculate the necessary equipment sizes.

Tutorial - 3
13 Feb 2017

1. A liquid–liquid mixture containing 6 kg/s of Oil with 0.5 kg/s of water is to be separated in a
decanter. Densities of water and oil are 995 and 880 kg/m3, respectively. Viscosity values of
water and oil are 0.8×10−3 and 3.5×10−3 kg/m/s, respectively. Assuming the oil to be the
continuous phase, the decanter to be a horizontal drum with a length to diameter ratio of 3 to 1
and an interface across the center of the drum, estimate the dimensions of the decanter to separate
water droplets less than 150 μm.

2. A gravity settler is to be used to separate particles greater than 175 μm from a flowrate of gas 1.6
m3/s. The density of the particles is 1800 kg/m3. The density of the gas is 1.2 kg/m3, and its
viscosity is 1.85×10−5 kg/m/s. Estimate the dimensions of the settling chamber assuming a
rectangular cross section with length to be twice that of the breadth.
