Road Thickness Calculation

The document summarizes the design of a new flexible pavement according to IRC:37-2018 standards. It provides input data on traffic levels, growth rates, design life, and soil properties. It then calculates the initial traffic, cumulative standard axles over the design life, and required pavement thickness. The total required thickness is 495mm while the proposed design is 590mm, so it meets the standard.

Design of New Flexible Pavement as per IRC:37-2018, CI-4.

Input data:
No .of commerical vechicles per day P = 15 CVPD
Annual traffic growth rate r = 1.0 %
Design life of Pavement n = 20 Years
Vechicle damage factor (VDF) F = 3.5 (approx)
Effective CBR of subgrade soil (from soil report) = 5.0 %
No. of year of completion of construction X = 1.0 Years
Lane distribution factor D 0.75 (CI-4.5.1.5)

Design Calculation:
a) Initial in each direction in the year of completion of construction
x
A = P(1+r)
where, A = Initial traffic (commerical Vechicle)
P = no.of commerical vechicle per day as per count
r = Annual growth rate of commerical vechicles in
decimal.
X = no.of years between the last count & the year of
completion of construction
A = 15 x (1+1/100)^1
= 15.15 CVPD

b) Culmulative number of standard axles to be carried during design life in msa

n
NDES = 365 x [(1+r) -1] x A xDx F
r
where, NDES = Cumulative number of standard axles to be
catered for during design period of n years
A = Initial traffic (commerical Vechicle Per Day )
in the year of completion of construction.
D = Lane distribution factor
F = Vechicle damage factor
n = Design period, in years
r = Annual growth rate of commerical vechicles in
decimal.

NDES = (365 x ( (1+1/100)^20-1) x 15.2 x 0.75 x 3.5 )/(1/100)/100000

= 0.3196189 msa
= say 5 msa
Referring IRC-37,2018, Fig-12 and Plate-1
Total Pavement thickness for traffic say 5 msa and CBR value of 5% = 495 mm

Thickness of pavement layers are: Req. Provided

Surface Course = 30 mm 40 mm
Base/Binder Course = 65 mm 150 mm
WMM Layer = 250 mm 200 mm
Granular Base Layer (GSB) = 150 mm 200 mm

Total Thickness = 495.0 mm 590.0 mm Hence ok.
