i. An ASP based sewage treatment plant needs to be designed to treat sewage from 550 homes with an average of 3.5 people per home. Calculations are required to determine the aeration tank size and air supply rate. ii. Wastewater characteristics are provided to calculate various COD, TSS, nitrogen values. iii. The best option of either a standard or high rate trickling filter needs to be selected to treat 20,000 m3/day of sewage with 30% BOD removal in PST based on minimum area and media requirements.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PATNA

End - Semester Examination, 2020 (July)
Environmental Engineering II (6CE125)
(B. Tech. Civil Engg: 6th Semester)
Time 3 hrs + 0.5 hr for uploading answer sheet, Full Marks 40
Assume any missing data suitably
(Question 1, 2 and 6 are compulsory, 1&2 @ 9 marks, 6 @ 4 marks. Answer any three from remaining
questions @ 6 marks each)

1. An ASP based sewage treatment plant needs to be installed to treat the sewage from a
housing society consisting of 550 individual family residences. The average family size
has been estimated to 3.5 persons per family. Considering sewage flow of 180 L/per.day
and BOD5 generation 35 g/person.day, calculate the size of aeration tank and rate of air
supply employing following data:
i. efficiency of primary clarifier = 30 % for BOD removal and 60 % SS removal
ii. Effluent concentration = 30 mg/L
iii. Values for the growth constants: Ks = 100 mg/L BOD5, μm = 2.5 d -1 , kd = 0.05 d -1 ,
Y = 0.50 mg VSS / mg BOD5, X = 2000 mg/L (MLVSS)
iv. Density of air 1.22 kg/m3, rate of oxygen transfer 6%.

2. Table given below provides wastewater characterisation results:

Constituent Concentration (mg/L)

Influent wastewater characteristics
BOD 195
sBOD 94
COD 465
sCOD 170
rbCOD 80
TSS 220
VSS 200
TKN 40
NH4-N 26
Alkalinity 200 (as CaCO3)
Effluent wastewater characteristics
sCODe 30
sON 1.2

Determine concentration of following:

i. bCOD (biodegradable COD)
ii. nbpCOD (nonbiodegradable particulate COD)
iii. sbCOD (slowly biodegradable COD)
iv. nbVSS (nonbiodegradable VSS)
v. iTSS (inert TSS)
vi. nbpON (nonbiodegradable particulate organic nitrogen)
vii. TKN Total degradable nitrogen

You may use following relationship:

COD = bCOD + nbCOD

Page 1 of 2
bCOD = 1.6 (BOD) approx.
nbCOD = sCODe + nbpCOD
bCOD = sbCOD + rbCOD
TKN = NH4-N + ON
ON = bON+nbON
nbON = nbsON+nbpON

3. It is proposed to install a trickling filter to provide desired degree of treatment of the

wastewater as per the norms of MoEF, Government of India for a city situated on the
bank of Holy River Ganga. As per the survey report, characteristics of the wastewater
are observed as follows:
Volume of wastewater = 20,000 m3/d
BOD5 of raw sewage = 180 mg/L
BOD removal in PST = 30 %
You have to select one between standard rate and high rate trickling filter on the basis
of minimum area requirement as well material requirement for filter media with
percentage savings. For simplicity you may take depth of the filter media as 1.4 m,
recirculation ratio 1.5.

4. A rectangular sewer with width 2 times its depth is hydraulically equivalent to a circular
one. Find the relation between the width of the rectangular sewer and the diameter of
the circular sewer.

5. A 225 mm diameter sewer is to discharge 0.006 cumecs at a velocity as self-cleansing

as sewer flowing full at 0.9 m/s. Find the depth, velocity generated, and the required
gradient. Use Manning’s rugosity coefficient as 0.014. Also assume that the rugosity
coefficient varies with depth.

6. Draw the flow chart showing all necessary unit operations/processes for the treatment
of municipal wastewater treatment employing i. completely mixed activated sludge
process ii. Two stage high rate trickling filter and iii. Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket
(USSB) reactor.

7. Answer any two:

(i) Working principle and design concept of septic tank along with merits and demerits
(ii) Differentiate between ponds and lagoons. With the help of diagram explain system
biology of facultative pond
(iii) Bulking of sludge: definition, probable causes and suggested remedies.
