Eighth Semester B. E. ( Civil Engineering ) Examination

Elective – IV
WATER AND WASTE WATER TREATMENT

Time : 3 Hours ] [ Max. Marks : 60

Instructions to Candidates :—
(1) All questions carry equal marks.
(2) Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
(3) Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
(4) Use of non – programmable calculator and drawing instruments is permitted.
(5) Mobile phone in examination hall is not permitted.

1. (a) Draw a layout of conventional water treatment plant and state the function
of each unit. Also state the ideal requirement of treatment plant site.
5(CO1)
(b) A municipal corporation decided to desing a new WTP of capacity 45 MLD for
a town. Design a suitable cascade aerator for above WTP. Draw neat designed sketch.
5(CO2)

2. Solve any Two of the following :—

(a) Design a suitable flash mixer for the design flow of 40 MLD. Draw neat
designed sketch. 5(CO2)
(b) Enlist various types of rapid and slow mixing devices used in water treatment.
Water zig – zag through a baffled channel with a velocity of 0.8 m / s in
the slots and with the velocity of 0.25 m / s in the channel. There are
15 around the end baffles. Determine :—
(i) Loss of head neglecting normal channel friction
(ii) Power dissipated

KOLP/RW - 19 /9618 Contd.

(iii) Velocity gradient
(iv) Gt value

Flow of water through the channels is 25 MLD and displacement time

is 30 minutes. Assume water temperature as 20 0C. 5(CO1,2)
(c) Starting from the basic principle derive 'Hazen's', Newton's and Stoke's equations
for settling velocity of discrete particles. 5(CO1)

3. (a) Design a suitable numbers and size of rapid sand filter beds for the design
flow of 20 MLD. Also design a suitable manifold and lateral system as
UDS for any one filter bed as you designed. 5(CO1)
(b) Starting from the basic principle, derive Chick's law equation. Hence determine time
of contact required if chlorine is used as disinfectant to obtain 99% kill of bacteria.
Assume reaction rate constant is 0.3 per minute. 5(CO1)

4. (a) Define 'BOD'. After conducting an experiment on sewage sample, 4 – day

BOD at 20 0C was observed to be 30 mg / l. Estimate
(i) Ultimate BOD of a sample

(ii) 5 – day BOD at 20 0 C

(iii) 5 – day BOD at 30 0 C

Assume BOD rate constant at 20 0C = 0.23 / day (base 'e') 5(CO3)

OR

(b) From the following test data, determine the value of ultimate BOD and
BOD rate constant using 'Least Square Method'.
Time (days) 2 4 6 8 10
BOD (mg / l) 36 52 62 66 68
5(CO3)
(c) A city discharges 50 lps of treated sewage into a stream whose minimum
rate of flow is 200 lps. The velocity of the stream is 0.15 m / s. The temperature
of sewage and that of stream is 20 0C. 5 – day BOD at 20 0C of the

KOLP/RW - 19 /9618 2 Contd.

sewage is 30 mg / l and that of stream is 2.0 mg / l. The wastewater contains
no DO, while stream contain 7.5 mg / l of DO. Determine critical oxygen
deficit and its location.
De – oxygenation rate constant and re – oxygenation rate constant at 20 0C
as 0.2 / d and 0.6 / d (base e) respectively. Assume saturation DO at
20 0C is 9.2 mg / l. 5(CO3)

5. (a) Design a suitable circular 'Primary Sedimentation Tank' for Sewage treatment
plant of capacity 15 MLD. Draw neat designed sketch. 5(CO4)
OR

(b) Design a suitable 'Grit chamber with proportional flow weir' for a Sewage treatment
plant of capacity 40 MLD. Draw neat designed sketch. 5(CO4)
(c) Define 'Screen'. Explain various types of screen used in wastewater treatment. Also
expalin various disposal methods of screenings. 5(CO3)

6. (a) With respect to 'Activated sludge process' define the following

design parameters :
(i) Volumetric BOD loading
(ii) F / M ratio
(iii) Solid Retenation time
(iv) Sludge Volume Index 4(CO4)

(b) Write a note on following (any Two) :—

(i) Stabilization pond
(ii) 'Tapered' and 'Step' aeration process
(iii) Sludge drying bed. 6(CO3)
