OBJECTIVES /AIMS (WHAT WE PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH AT
THE END OF THIS TOPIC)

1. READ AND WRITE NUMBERS IN THEIR CORRECT PLACE VALUE.

2. ARRANGING NUMBERS IN ORDER OF SIZE.
3. ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS TO THE NEAREAST ONES, TENS,
HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS.
4. IDENTIFY ODD, EVEN, WHOLE, N ATURAL, PRIME AND
COMPOSITE NUMERS.
5. DISTINGUISH BETWEEN FCATORS AND MULTIPLES.
6. INDENTIFY LOWEST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM), HIGHEST
COMMON FACTOR (HCF)

1.PLACE VALUE
Place Value is the value of digit in a number. for example, the five in 530 value
is hundred.

*NB. THE HIGHLIGHTED WORDS REPRESENTS THE PLACE VALUE

OF THE GIVEN NUMBERS.

Face value of a digit is the digit or number itself; it is unchangeable and definite
for example five in the number 25, 250, 50 the face value of five in all those
numbers would still be five.
EXCERISE 1.0
WRITE THE PLACE VALUE FOR THE HIGHLIGHTED NUMBER BELOW
E.G 23 – THE NUMBER 2 IS HIGHLIGHTED SO YOUR ANSWER SHOULD BE
WRITTEN AS (TENS)

1. 521
2. 1002
3. 5321
4. 56321
5. 80900
6. 255326
7. 5236421

2. ARRANGING NUMBERS

Numbers can be arranged in a lot of ways but for today’s class we will be
focusing on ordering numbers in Ascending and Descending order.
Ascending means you arrange numbers from smallest to biggest e.g. 1,2,3,4,5
Descending means you arrange numbers from biggest to smallest e.g. 5,4,3,2,1

EXERCISE 1.2
Arrange the following numbers in ascending order
a) 5,10,2,8,9,3
b) 2,15,1,22,40
c) 23,45,9,52, 6

Arrange the following numbers in descending order

a) 2,5,52,89,21
b) 89,75,3,87,36
c) 96,51,75,25,23

3. Rounding off

4. Types of number
 Natural numbers -or counting numbers start at 1 and continue to infinity
N=1,2,3........
 Whole numbers start and continue to infinity. W =0,1,2,3......
 Integers are directed numbers. The set integers contain negative numbers
and all whole numbers. Z =.... -3, -2, -1,0,1,2,3......
 Even numbers are numbers divisible by 2. For example, 4and 178.
 Odd numbers are numbers that cannot be divide by 2. for example, 3
and 449
 Prime numbers can only be divided by only two numbers -the number
itself and 1. for example 3,11,23
 Composite numbers can be divided by more than two numbers. For
example, 6 can be divided by 1,2,3 and 6; can be divided 1,5 and 25.
 Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as fractions. For
example, 5,3/4, 2 ½,114/23, 1.2.
