Bus Lane Pattern Live Loading

This report details the structural modeling and analysis of a bus lane at the Adwa Center Project. Ten load patterns were analyzed to model the movement of buses on the level three floor slab, supported by beams. The maximum bending moments from the patterns were enveloped with a fully loaded case to design the beams for flexure. Reinforcement details are provided for beams supporting the bus lane slab.

1 Introduction

2 Structural Modeling and Analysis

2.1 General and Structural Modeling

The specific design report intends to show the approach followed in the design of beams supporting the
bus drive way. Different load scenarios were investigated in order to capture the maximum action effect
of the moving live load.

2.1.1 Reinforced Concrete Slabs

2.1.1.1 Level three floor Slab

System: Suspended beam supporting solid slabs made of reinforced concrete with overall
thickness of t = 130 mm and t = 200 mm on bus lane;

See Position Plan – Level three Floor Slabs in Figure 2-2.

Loading:

Permanent Action, Gk:

a) Parking area

Self -wt.: 0.13 m ×25 kN/m3 = 3.25 kN/m2

Screed: 0.05 m ×23 kN/m3 = 1.15 kN/m2
Epoxy Finish: = 0.45 kN/m2
Total Load = 4.85 kN/m2

b) Lobby area

Self -wt.: 0.13 m ×25 kN/m3 = 3.25 kN/m2

Screed: 0.03 m ×23 kN/m3 = 0.69 kN/m2
Floor Finish: 0.02 m ×27 kN/m3 = 0.54 kN/m2
MEP Service: 0.02 m ×23 kN/m3 = 0.77 kN/m2
Total Load = 5.25 kN/m2

Variable Actions, Qk:

parking area: Live category G = 5.0 kN/m2

Toilet Area: Live category A = 2.0 kN/m2

Shopping Area: Live category D = 5.0 kN/m2

Lobby area: Live category C = 4.0 kN/m2

Bus drive way: Live category G = 10.0 kN/m2

Pattern live load arrangement: 10 live load patterns are defined to model the movement of the bus and
the result was enveloped with a fully loaded case to design the beam.
