Division of Polynomials - Long Division

This lesson plan outlines a math lesson on dividing polynomials using long division. The objectives are for students to be able to divide polynomials using long division. The lesson will discuss what defines a polynomial and the long division process. Students will do sample problems on the board and as homework to practice long division of polynomials. Their mastery of the topic will be evaluated based on their ability to correctly divide polynomials using long division.

MATH 10 LESSON PLAN

June 25, 2017: 10 – Toledo, 11-12;

June 27, 2017: 10 – Dapito, 3-4pm

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. divide polynomials using long division

I. SUBJECT MATTER
1. Topic: Division of Polynomials - M10AL-Ig-1
2. References: G10 LM, pp.58-60,
3. Materials : Visual aids

II. PROCEDURE:
1. Preliminary Activities
1.1 Prayer and greetings
1.2 Checking of attendance
1.3 Setting of class mode
2. Lesson Proper
Discussion:
Polynomial- is an algebraic expression in the form anxn + an-1xn + an-2xn + …a1x + a0,
where a ≠ 0
A Polynomial must:
1) Not have a variable inside the radical symbol, Ex. √y
−3
2) Have No negative exponents. Ex. x
3
4
3) Have No fractional exponents in the variable. Ex. x

Terms of polynomial maybe written in any order but the Standard way of writing the
terms is in decreasing powers of the variable.

Long Division of Polynomials

First, write the dividend in standard form and insert zeros to coefficients of any missing
term. Both dividend and divisor should be in standard form. The long division method is shown
below.
2 4 3 2
Example: ( 10 x +2 x +8+7 x )÷( 2x + x−1 )

2 x 2+3 x+4
2 2 4 3 2x + x−1 4 3
2x +x−1|10 x +2x +8+7x = |2x +7 x +10 x 2 +0 x+8
2x4 + x3 - x2_______
6x3 + 11x2 + 0x
6x3 + 3x2 – 3x_____
8x2 + 3x + 8
8x2 + 4x - 4___
- x + 12 → remainder
−x +12
2
Rewriting the answer, we have x +3 x+4 2 x 2 +x−1
III. EVALUATION

Direction: Boardwork: Divide the following using long method .

1. (5x2 – 17x – 15) ÷ (x – 4) 4. (6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 6) ÷ (3x – 2)
2. (2x4+ x3 – 19x2 + 18x + 5) ÷ (2x – 5) 5. (4x + 6x4 + 5x2 – x – 10) ÷ (2x2 +
3. (4x5 – 25x4 + 40x3 + 3x2 – 18x) ÷ (x2 – 6x + 9)

IV. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: In Activity Notebook. Divide the following using long division.

1. (2x + x3 + 7x2 – 40) ÷ (x – 2)
2. (6x2 + x3 + 2x +44) ÷ (x + 2)
3. ( x3 + 35 + 9x2 +13x) ÷ (x – 5)
4. (–13x + 2x3 – 5x2 – 15) ÷ (2x + 5)
