Reflection

Badminton is a good sport, you can learn a lot of things from this, and it is a good
exercise for everyone. The badminton began in India in 1860’s with the game known as
poona or poonai, and developed from a children game called the battledore and
shuttlecock. In 15th century, China ti jian zi was played by kicking a shuttle into the air.
Historically, the shuttlecock called bird or birdie was a small cork hemisphere with a 16
goose feather attached and weighing of 0.17 ounce. In 1870’s, British officers took the
equipment for poona back to England. It was the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire,
England who officially introduced the game to England. In 1901, the official court
became rectangular. In 1893, Badminton had grown to the point where 14 clubs joined
to form the badminton association. In 1934, the International Badminton Federation
(IBF) was created. These nine countries; Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland
Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales and England were the original members of
IBF. In 1972, badminton was offered in Olympic games as demonstration and
exhibition sport. In 1992, the badminton became full medal Olympic sports. In 1996,
badminton mixed-doubles was introduced. The rectangular court is 44 feet long and 17
feet wide for singles, while 20 feet wide for doubles. A net is 5 feet high stretches across
the width of the court at its centre. A clear space of 4 feet around the court is needed. A
light long-handle racket is used by the badminton players. It must have a length of not
more than 27.94 cm and a width of not more than 20.9 cm.

I really enjoyed playing the game. I experienced a lot of things like how you hit
the shuttlecock with force and also how to use the different strategies or the so called
strokes. Also, I have applied the rules in playing the game and it’s good to know that I
had remembered and understood them well. In badminton, not all plays or strategies
work every time. Your opponents do not have the same strengths or weaknesses, so it
follows that you have to make adjustments if you want to win. Some players are weaker
on the backhand while some are stronger there. For the weaker backhand players, you
should adjust your shots more towards their body or opposite their racket hand. Some
players meanwhile are not too agile to move around the court, so good placing will
definitely work against them. For players who are very good smashers, of course you
should not want to give them high flying shots. It is all about mixing up and finding the
right style for every circumstance. Defensively, the trick is being able to withstand and
respond to which attacks your opponent uses on you. In life, we know that we are
presented with different challenges which we can only conquer through recognizing
necessary adjustments. Even if it’s not easy or should I say, the game itself is difficult it
is really enjoyable and will help your body produce sweat which I believe is helpful to
make a person healthy. As they say, health is wealth and in my experienced, badminton
is a good game for exercising. It can boost your energy in the sense that this game will
cause you to move fast. Apart from this, I experienced officiating the game. Because of
this, I learned the different hand gestures like how you use your hands to signal that the
shuttlecock is in or out.

I must say that this game thought me a lot of lessons. I learned not only where
this badminton game originated how it evolved as time passes and how it became a
part of Olympics but also that this is a game for self-esteem boosting, because you will
realize that you have to believe in your guts and that you have the ability to use the
most appropriate strategy to win. Badminton can become a means to improve one’s
health and it is a very good form of exercise. Playing Badminton was an incredible
learning experience, and definitely played a huge part in helping me develop. I believe
badminton is a fantastic sport that can give an individual so many positive experiences.
Amongst other things, badminton has given me the opportunity to compete (and
occasionally win) against some of my classmates. Without knowing the basics of the
game of badminton, it is impossible for one to fully enjoy playing it. You have to first
know how to play the game, how to grip the racket, how to properly hit the shuttlecock,
how to move on the court, how to defend, and how to score. Without understanding the
basics, you cannot develop the different skills needed in playing competitive badminton.
Same goes when talking about life itself. You must understand what life is, how it should
be spent, and how to live it fully. You must also develop the character traits, skills as in
badminton, for you to actualize the dream of living life well.
