Systems Engineering and Project Management: Summary Handout

Systems engineering takes a systems thinking approach, viewing problems more broadly than traditional event-based thinking. Systems thinking considers how elements interact within a whole, like an iceberg where most aspects are unseen. The seven factors of systems thinking help engineers understand a problem's context. Systems engineering defines project stages from requirements to evaluation, ensuring customer satisfaction through verification and reevaluation at each stage. Introducing systems engineering and a systems engineer can structure projects and reduce risks by applying this systematic process approach.

Systems Engineering and Project Management

There is a large difference between the event thinking and system

thinking is present. In event thinking, the straight line is followed for
getting the solution of a problem for reaching the root cause whereas, in
system thinking, the cyclic loop is followed and the root cause can be at
the nodes[ CITATION Thw19 \l 16393 ] . System thinking takes the approach of
Iceberg concept rather than the traditional method of taking the portion
of Iceberg which is visible through eyes[ CITATION Hem18 \l 16393 ] . System
thinking provides a broader view to the system engineer of looking at
the problem. Systems thinking skill has seven major factors that are
dynamic, system-as-cause, forest thinking, operational, closed-loop,
quantitative thinking, and scientific thinking[ CITATION Ric18 \l 16393 ].

System engineering also adopts the concept of system thinking and starts
from the documentation of requirement from the customer and
conducting the verification and validation of delivery until it is disposed
of[ CITATION INC19 \l 16393 ]. Therefore, it is a total team effort which is
required to be put to implement system engineering [ CITATION APM131 \l

16393 ]. The activities start from understanding the requirement and then it
progresses until the assessment of the value of the product is developed
and assessed in accordance with the requirement that is documented at
the beginning[ CITATION INC09 \l 16393 ]. And this is not only conducted at the
end, in fact, but the revaluation is also being performed at every regular
interval and every stage completion [ CITATION AlR10 \l 16393 ]. The overall risk
factor present in the project can be reduced and the complexity present
in the current project can also be addressed by conducting the
revaluation of every stage at every outcome of even a small
activity[ CITATION Kad191 \l 16393 ].

The system life cycle is divided into six major stages starting from the
analysis of the requirement obtained from the customer and ends at the
evaluation of the value that is obtained[ CITATION Lea19 \l 16393 ]. In between,
there are four more stages that are the designing of the requirement of
the solution and the development and testing of the developed solution
followed by the implementation stage. Once the implementation is done,
the documentation is also performed and then the evaluation of value is
performed.

System engineering is such a concept which helps the project

management in defining the project stages and developing the process of
the project from the beginning itself[ CITATION Evo14 \l 16393 ]. Therefore, it
helps in reducing the risk in the project and developing the structure and
components from the beginning by providing a systematic process
approach of execution. To have the advantages of system engineering in
project management, the system engineer can be introduced in the
project organigram. By doing so, all the benefits of system engineering
can be obtained in the project for reducing the risk and enhance the
probability of getting customer satisfaction. Therefore, the integrated
project organogram can be developed in which the project manager will
have two hands that are the project controller and the system engineer.
