Title: Dances With Wolves

Reaction:

Classic! – that’s the word would be use to describe the film as a whole appropriately. Though the film was showed in
screens during 90’s, its appeal and story can be relate to lifetime in such a way that racism, culture and language as well as the
right blended amount of emotions were placed in just one movie. Dances with wolves is all about how a white lieutenant whom
was John Dunbar turned and transformed as an Indian cultured man and became the “ Dances with Wolves “.

Living in a remote post just with his horse, John was able to befriended with the native Lakota Sioux, whom at first
considers him as another typical whiteman hunter, through attempting to build communication with them. Of course, this
happened not that easy. First, he was able to save the life of a white woman living with the Sioux called Stands with a Fist and
attempted to make friends with other Sioux particularly with Kicking Bird. The first attempt to talk with these Indian men was
hard for John, they differ in language. That’s why aside from saying and uttering the words, John needs to act things out and use
non-verbal language for the Sioux to understand. It was just so amazing that we can see the assimilation process of sharing
language and culture between the two. Both respected the fact that “they/he can’t understand me that’s why I need to find a way
for him to understand thing”. Forcing one’s culture to other was not depicted which in the most holistic way of perspective
should be the real thing to do and to happen, that’s respect. Both parties were open-minded enough to accept each other’s
perspectives, traditions, and values aside from the language. With these all elements of respect, understanding and acceptance, a
good rappor and friendship ties John with the native Indians which lead him to broader knowledge about others as well as with
himself.

But definitely we cannot forget the story of Standa with a Fist or Kristine in her real English name. yes, she’s also a
white. Her story also gave another palette of colors to the story. When she was on her 4 years of her life, she was already adopted
by the Indians when her parents died in the same post where Lt. John resides in. she grew up as an Indian and live in the native
Sioux way. But still role confusion arised in her. She find it already so difficult to act the English way should go and also speak
her real native toungue, that is English. She already find it difficult to say things in English that’s why upon talking with Dunbar,
the interaction was not that fully verbal, it is also mixed with gestures and other actions to make things clearer. From this story of
her, we can see the evident fact that one’s culture is determined by how a particular person as raised, that no matter how literate
you are in your own language, there’s a way for it to be vanished and totally forgotten. The reason behind this is the misuse of the
language and the lack of utilizing it. It’s much became harder for her because of too much assimilating the Indian culture. But
what’s good about this thing is that it only shows that culture can be definitely learned, shared, it is changing, and can change
one’s whole identity as well.

The open-mindedness of the native Sioux to accept Lt. John Dunbar, the respect given by the Indians, the cultural
struggle of Kristine, and a whiteman turned into a Sioux – all of these can just be equated with one, that is: appreciation.

Ten Bears: You are the only white man I have ever known. I have thought about you a lot. More than you think. And I
understand your concern. But I think you are wrong. The white man the soldiers are looking for no longer exists. Now there is
only a Sioux named Dances With Wolves.
