Course Description: 
This course offers students opportunities to create, perform, listen to, and analyze music from various 
styles and genres (eg rock, pop, jazz, classical). You will develop your skills in reading, writing, and 
performing musical notation as well as your training your ears for musical perception.  
 
Grade Breakdown:  
50% major grades:​ tests, projects, reports 
50% minor grades:​ quizzes, homework, classwork, etc 
 
9 Week Schedule for 2020-2021: 
1st 9 Weeks: ​August 12-Oct 9 (21 classes total) 
2nd 9 Weeks: ​Oct 14-Dec 18 (19 classes total)  
3rd 9 Weeks: ​Jan 5-March 5 (21 classes total) 
4th 9 Weeks: ​Mar 15-May 21 (22 classes total) 

Required Supplies: 
● 10-Stave Manuscript Paper​ for music notation 
● Spiral Notebook for note-taking 
● Pencils with erasers 
● Access to a keyboard instrument at home is advantageous, but not required 
 
Live Zoom Class Expectations 
● Be on time 
● Must have correct first and last name as username 
● Must have camera on 
● Classroom-appropriate behavior at all times 
● Disruptive or inappropriate behavior will result in removal from live session, parent contract, 
and disciplinary referral 
Classroom Rules and Expectations 
● NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE MUSIC THEORY ROOM​ (that includes gum, candy, etc.).   
● All trash must be put in the trash cans. 
● Students should be prepared and ready at the scheduled beginning of class.  
● All students will bring a ​pencil​ (NOT pen) and the theory notebook to class every day.  
● As with any arts class emphasizing skill acquisition, regular attendance is vital.   
● If a student is absent, it is expected that the student will ask for the make-up work. 
● It is expected that any student requiring extra help will ask for it. Appointments are recommended. 
● Mature behavior, respectful of instructor and colleagues, is expected at all times.  
 
Computer Lab Procedures 
● Only use the computers as instructed by the teacher. 
● Do not unplug any part of the computer or keyboard unless instructed by the teacher. 
● Only use the piano keyboard when instructed to do so by the teacher. 
● Do not pound on the keyboards—they break easily! 
● Be mature and use good judgment when ​using the music theory lab equipment.
